Default Whats the clatter with it?

I am running 91-93 octane + in my 87 (71000 miles, automatic getting about 25 mpg mostly highway per tank of gas, no mods, use mobil 1 10-30) and I get some clatter at the low end ie. from a stop and stomp the gas clatter-clatter while accelerating, and a little at the first shift point for just a second or two. Is this a timing issue or is this a combination of issues, or is this a normal kind of thing. Suggestions on how to fix, what to fix, can't fix. I don't hear or feel any kind of hesitation or engine miss ever. I think the clatter sounds, well :U Thanks again for your help as usual.

OR

am I concerned about nothing?

It could be your timing but I'm not sure that's it. I was playing around with the timing yesterday and too much will make it sound like your engine is passing bb's.

I had the same problem with my '87. First of all, I only used 92 or higher octane fuel. It still did it. I did two things and don't know which one cured it. I did the TB bypass and fixed an obstruction in the rear Y-pipe. The converter had fragmented and lodged chunks in the pipe. I can now run 90 octane with not pinging. Make sure that your timing is dead on 6 degrees. I tried 8 degrees BTDC and the ping was back.

try switchiung to a lower thermostat, like a 160 degree one. heat has alot to do with pinging too. i put a 160 in mine, and i can safely run 87 octane at 8*, with higher octane, i bet 12* would be obtainable.
