hello all,
this one has me stumped.while on the interstate today i noticed my oil and water temps at 230*.this is cruising at 75-80 mph in 6th gear.they would occaisonally dip to 225* and come back up.when i get off the interstate and cruise at 45mph in 5th gear the temp comes back to 180-185 and stays there.while waiting in the staging lanes at the dragstrip(and track time)it cycles between 180-190.
the short cruise back to the interstate and the first couple of miles on the interstate it runs 180-190.then it slowly creeps back up to 230 and stays 225-230 until i get back off the interstate. WTF?
the coolant is full, both my fans come on,and there doesent seem to be any air in the system.the radiator cap is new as well.i have a be-cool 170*stat.
the car was dyno tuned about a week ago and was'nt doing this before.
i managed to run a best of 13.06@109 today as well.
any ideas would be GREATLY APPRECIATED!
All I can tell you is if I cruise for a time at 80 mph in my A4 the oil temps go to 230-240...I do have 3:73 gears in it so I'm running at about 3000 rpm at 80...
Sorry to hear you had the same prob on the way home. Good seeing you today... Call Jeff and see what he says. Possible detonation on the highway causing the timing to retard? You'll figure it out.
I see two major possibilities. One is air flow caused by debris between the condenser and the radiator, and/or the fan(s) if they are are running at that speed. The second would be if you are lugging the engine, trying to move 80 mph air at rpms that are too low.
i have emailed jeff for his opinion.i had'nt thought of the detonation.on my last run i did a burnout and for the first time there was no tire spin or clutch slippage and it bogs of the line and spark knock rattles until i get some rpm back up.i guess leaving at 3000rpm and hooking is not enough

RACE ON!!![/QUOTE
When I replaced my radiator I was suprised that 1/3 of the radiator was blocked by grass clippings, etc between the radiator and condensor. The Vette shopsaid every few years pull the radiator and clean it out. I also get debri in front of the radiator, up at the top It seems we having rolling vacuum sweepers.
the front of the radiator is clean.if it were clogged inbetween i don't think it would run so cool at idle and around town.right?it was recently dyno tuned and he switched the fans to come on sooner, first one at 195(previously at 205).the second one is 10 degrees later.do i need to look at this?
Probably not. Especially if they still shut off at 30 mph as they originally did. Try cruising like that in 5th gear and see if it heats up the same. I'm back to the lugging of the engine.

Maybe. Think about it: at idle and 35-45, you're putting far less stress and heat on the cooling system. Therefore, maybe it can handle it at those engine rpms.
The lugging and detonation, while I don't think there's anything wrong with 80 mph and 6th gear, if the car was dyno tuned and this wasn't happening before--that may be a place to look. That bogging on the line could be a lot of things but the knock sounds troubling.
Tell us how it all turns out. 230 at highways speeds in these temps today isn't normal.

after reading your post i went back and looked at the a/f ratio on my dyno sheet.it starts 2150 rpm.it starts at almost 15:1 and spikes to18:1 before settling in at 13:1 at 2350 rpm and maintaining 13:0 -13.2:1 until 6500 rpm.if it is running that lean and/or detonating/retarding timing at a constant rpm that may explain it.i have emailed jeff at cam for his opinion.
i will keep you posted.
thanks,
george
At a cruise in relatively cool temps, both fans will actually impede airflow through the radiator. I play with this all the time. It blows me away but if I turn the fans off (AC off) at a 65-75mph cruise my temps can drop as much as 10 degrees. No if I'm rolling real slow, the fans should be on. I'm also running a BMAD, but I don't think that would make a difference.
i have spoken to jeff at CAM and we are going to try richening up the a/f ratio at part throttle and set the fan temps back to where they were to eliminate them as a variable.
i will post an update when we make the change.
