It provides cool air under pressure to the intake system.
You can make/buy a Ram Air system for a '92 Vette. They commonly take air from the high pressure area in front of the radiator or, in one case, takes air in through the front license plate area.
Re: simply a gimmick to sell cars(Bradley33) (Cratzy)
RamAir = poor mans turbo
Or more appropriately,
RamAir = big marketing gimmick
Most of them are better at sucking dollars out of your pocket than air. ;)
And where in the world did that "5 HP at 60 MPH" quote come from? Which system, which car, what test conditions, ad nauseum. Generic claims such as this have no meaning at all.
Been there, done that... note the photo in my .sig. I don't argue the merits of a "ram air" system. I'm currently running a Vortex unit right now. All I'm saying is that the advertised power gains are exaggerated. Worthwhile? Probably? Worth the money (as compared to an open filter lid with K&N)? You'll have to be the judge.
More cool air means more pwr. Also, you get a SLIGHT pressure increase on the intake charge....very slight. Older 60's musclecars like the Camaro had this option. Cool air under pressure from the cowl area was guided into the motor via the 'cowl induction hood'. This mod can't hurt, but is an expensive kit, for the hp increase....looks good though. :flag

Sorry, that was for the Camaro SS. If you really get GM talking (or drunk) they will give you that statistic. It's hidden deep in places though.
