what performance gain would i get from a supercharger on my '91 vette..its got a k&n filter and no precats...it runs really good now with good power...will it kill my engine if i race it once a week or less?
thanx

Horsepower depends on a lot of variables but if you want to keep it reliable don't run more than 8lbs. boost. Be sure to get intercooler and you can expect close to 400hp and it will still get the same gas mileage and be just as streetable as it is now. Far superior to naturally aspirated engine with rough running gas suckin cam.
Won't he be able to run more considering the lower compression? Also, if he chose an ATI unit, due to the intercooler, I'm assuming that he'd be safe and free from detonation, correct? And, if worse comes to work, couldn't a MSD-6BTM help out with higher boost levels?
(I'm asking these questions just to better educate myself on supercharger setups)
WOW!!i didnt know you were my financial consultant?!...i will decide if i can afford it or not..i think that is everyones right to decide....as for experience isnt this forum here to help others learn from other peoples experience and knowledge...
thanx
so what should i ask for exactly and how much will this run me...also on long trips like 1800 miles which i take will it kill my engine?
thanx
You should call ATI or some of the people that make up kits from vortech cost is $ 4600:00 plus installation and from your questions you will need to hire it done. Contrary to what you will read on this forum driving on long trips with a supercharger will not kill your engine in fact it will last longer than naturally aspirated engine with high compression because na engine is under more stress all the time. If a motor is making 400hp it is under the same strain sometimes less strain on blower motor since it can make same power at lower rpm than a naturally aspirated motor. However i think i would agree with the post above mine that you probably should not go for a blower setup this is for people that are looking for serious power and they need to have a sound understanding of forced induction. If you read the post of late about all the bashing on blowers and in nearly every case there problems are of thier own doing. I would recomend you forget it. :flag
I will give you my experience with ATI. I do think that it can be a reliable setup. I have mine installed for 3 years. However, if I were to do it again, I would not. I would just go the Superram, heads/cam route. It would be cheaper in the end and give you better results.
The installation of this unit won't stop with the almost $4k for the kit. You need to spend considerable $$$ on tuning, including chip and exhaust, etc.
The stock ATI kit won't probably give you 8 lbs of boost without changing the stock pully which voids the warrenty. You will also need to fabricate something to relocate the air filter so that it pulls in cool air rather than the hot air directly off the exhaust manifold/headers. Many people choose to relocate their battery and move the air filter there. That is the best method I have seen so far. I cannot get anywhere the boost they claim, so the HP results were very disappointing to me.
So my advice is to find someone that has experience really setting up one of these things successfully. There are a few people on this forum that can do it but they may not be near you.
But I am confident that you can find a great tuner that can do the heads, cam intake near you if you need one.
i thank you both for your intelligence....i will go the heads ..intake route...it seems though that every time i go somewhere with this car everyone has a different opinion but i trust this forum
thanx
Everyone has to admit that the whine of the ATI unit is just SO INTIMIDATING. I don't know how many people back down after I start my car up. Oh well, maybe it's me and I haven't lost my childhood tendencies .
Jackyy, if you don't know much about superchargers, that's OK. Everybody has to start somewhere. There are plenty of books on Supercharging and turbocharging. Both are very similar. Not to mention the very informative threads here. Yeah, superchargers require an initial investment...but I think if you are serious about HP, then that's the way to go. (Along with some other engine mods) Knowledge=Power :flag
thanx guys...i have pretty much decided..i will port and polish my heads..and change the intake...i am going to see a guy tonight thats a friends cousin that always works on his vette and maybe he can help with certain things
thanx
The above post may come off a little stronger than intended but the advice is honestly very good. A blower car is going to eat up 20-40K plus the car to do it correctly. I know everybody knows somebody that did it for less...... . I don't claim to know everything, I have made many mistakes and see many on the road to failure with the setups being run. Good luck to all.
