Default MAF Screens

i read on a website that taking out the screens on the MAF sensor would increase airflow and give about 10 HP and about 12 lbs torque. anyone know if this is true/safe? MAF sensors arent exactly cheap and I dont want to mess with it without knowing.....anythoughts?

Leave it be. If your still convinced descreening will be an improvement, only remove the rear screen. This way the front screen will still protect the MAF wire.

The air fiiter's job is to protect the MAF wiring.

On an L98, it frees up about 5hp or so, so I would do it. You will not notice the difference however, and I would NOT recommend touching the heat sink fins inside.

Open up a beer with your can opener, then open up your MAF.

I've got four sets of MAF screens laying in the top of my toolbox, if that lets you know how I feel about them. Get a sharp knife and just cut around the seam until it falls off. No bigee.

Protect if from what??? Air Turbulence....certainly not anything else unless you have a really faulty air cleaner installation..

I have seen stuff on the back side of the filter quite a few times. It would end up going through the MAF screens though to, some would get stuck in the screen but some would still pass it.

Yeah that some people are not equiped to understand how delicate the MAF wires are. So they F**K up their MAFS and end up pissed and out the money. So the protection for the noobs is from themselves, or like you identified, a faulty air cleaner installation.

Is THAT so HARD to understand?

Or should I shout it so you can hear me?

Go ahead if you want...personally mine will stay, they were installed for a purpose...something to do with the air flow, maybe the general just wanted to spend a few more bucks on something worthless. And I'd sure like to see a before and after dyno proving a 5-10 hp gain

here is something to think about i have both screens removed and heat sinks taken out of mine allways had

but i did a test a couple of years ago i run a k&n filter with a cold air setup i decided to remove the k&n filter and replace it with a filter i made up which consisted of just a plain piece of screen sandwiched in place of the filter and actually lost et and mph i went back and forth on two seperate days and confirmed the k&n filter in place was faster and quicker than virtually nothing at all

the only thing i can come up with is what k&n claims it actually staghtens the air flow collum is true

My Vette stopped running and won't start now. I was thinking my MAF may be going bad but am not sure how to check it. How is this done and if it's bad, what's the best place to get a replacement?

Go to pepboys or a local auto parts store and buy some MAF cleaner first. hmm.. not sure if it would prevent it from starting though.

The MAF looks clean enough. What would I be cleaning off of it? Is there a separate "MAF" cleaner or would it be some common aerosol degreaser/cleaner?

thanks,

unplug the MAF and try and start the car. If it runs ok you have a MAF problem. Could be the MAF or the module that the 85s have. Check for trouble codes first and start a thread with all the neccessary info. You will get more help that way.
