Well, first. . . I gave back the 1992 vette and bought another one last night on Craigslist. The 1992 was just too much god damn work! So for another $2500, I bought one ready to run. . . . .glad I did too. It is a ...1996...Black... with 99k miles. . ..red interior. Tranny seems to jerk a little from first to second, but no jerk from second to third or fourth.....I just drove it twenty miles and I love it! Some smuck in a loud *** rice beater comes along and cuts.... . . .oh....thats for another thread. (I just laughed as I watched him in my rear view mirror )
Ok the question......I noticed that many in this forum frown upon washing the engine bay with a spray washer. . .then how do you clean that baby till its sparkling?!?!?!?!?
-find the water pump and shove a wrinked up plastic garbage bag under the general area to protect the optispark. Look up an LT1 cross section diagram if you need to so that you know exactly where the optispark is and where not to spray.
-Buy some simple green and spray down 1 entire side with simple green. Use alot of it and let it sit for 3-5min.
-Now set your garden hose attachment to "gentle shower" and delicately wash the simple green off the engine.
-DO NOT GET ANY WATER OR SIMPLE GREEN NEAR THE OPTISPARK, WHICH IS DIRECTLY UNDER THE WATERPUMP.
-DO NOT GET ANY WATER OR SIMPLE GREEN NEAR THE OPTISPARK, WHICH IS DIRECTLY UNDER THE WATERPUMP. I CANT TELL YOU THIS ENOUGH
-Take a leaf blower or use your shopvac in blower mode to blow all of the water off the side of the engine you just cleaned.
-Now go to the other side and repeat
-Now that the entire engine is moderately clean you can do the rest with simple green and rags. Do 1 small section at a time and before long the engine will look new again
NO! IT should have the Distributor behinf the TPI and the firewall and you should see the plug wires running from it to both sides of the engine. If your wire are not on the back of the block you might have something verrry interesting!!

I believe an 88 does not have an opti. In that case....apply some engine cleaner. I use gunk brand let it sit for a while then just hose it off. Some of the more greasy areas might need some old fashioned scrubing. Wet, lather, rinse. Repeat if necessary.
That worked like a charm...still had to resist just jet spraying it down. . . .I love a spotless engine block. Car runs better that way :-).
thanks guys

One thing I do on my '95 is stuff some rags on top and around the opti, then plastic (shopping bag etc) over top of the rags. The rags will wick up and hold recklessly sprayed water, if the water gets past the plastic. I've cleaned inside my engine bay a couple times this way with no ill effects.
I recommened Greased Lighting Orange Blast as a great engine cleaner. It works better than Simple Green but is still as safe as Simple Green.
