Default 4L60E Question

I picked up a 4L60E that I would like to put into my 78 because I was told that it could be set up for manual shifting and not need a computer.

Does anyone know how to set this up? I have seen references to it being done, but not the process. If it is not possible, is anyone interested in a rebuilt 4L60E?

I think you are talking about the 700-R4 or the 4L60. The 4L60E needs a computer to know when to shift.

I'm pretty sure I've seen "full manual, no computer" versions of 4L60Es offered by rebuilders.

Wait to hear from PeteK - he's the resident 4L60E expert.

Actually it's a mechanically simpler trans that it's predecessors.

Because the 4l60e does not contain alot of the parts that the 4l60 does. I cannot imagine how they could be converted to a non electronic version for a cost effective amount of money. I honestly do not know though. They do sell stand alone computors that can run them in just about any vehicle.
Other than the ability to change shift points precisely at a given mph, I don't think there is an advantage to using them in a non pcm car. The main parts of the trans are identical to the 700/4l60. Slight improvements were made over the years, but most parts and pieces are identical.

I ran across a transgo kit that seems to be what I am looking for based on the description, but I don't know enough about it.

http://www.bulkpart.com/Merchant2/me...roduct_Count=2

I was thinking I'd seen a shift kit that does what you want, but last night I could only find the "full manual" description in 4L80E kits.

I think that's what you need.

I'd go look around on street rod forums for 4L60E information. That would be the primary market for such a conversion.

If I may offer an opinion, sell the 4l60e and pick up an aux valve body 87 1/2-92 4l60. In my opinion, this will be a better solution to your goal, and give minimal heartburn with great results.
Again, just an opinion. If you do convert the electronic unit, please do a wrie up. I am interested. ...Pete
