Default 4L60 question for Pete K

Hello again. One more question ! My torque converter is 12" TCI-242800
with 2800 stall speed.
Can I use it with rebuild transmission up to 600 hp?
One more question.Do I need external cooler with fan or without or it is good to use original Vette in radiator cooler? And what oil is better to use in my application?

Thank you.Alex.Russia.

Alex,
I will answer these in order.
1) I personally have had problems with that exact part number from TCI. Because of that, I would not use it. In my opinion, horrible quality piece. Again, only my opinion.
The tci(and other brand) 12 inch converters are reworked stock converters. Even the best 12 inch may not hold up to the power you are making, especially if you plan to use the car to potential. I just sold a 12 inch converter to 85 stalker. He does not plan to hit the dragstrip often, if at all, and we added anti-balloon plates to his to prevent the converter from "ballooning", or spreading internally.
I always recommend a cooler, especially over 2000 stall. It is just good, dirt cheap insurance. Coolers WILL pay for themselves by extending the life of the trans. Adding one with a thermostaically controlled fan is a great idea. If the budget allows, do it. You will not regret it.
I always put the cooler inline (but after) the stock cooler in the rad.
I use any name brand dexron 3 with no issues.
I personally, do not like synthetics in an auto gearbox. I have seen unexplained failure in auto transmissions that used it. Also, avoid B&M trickshift. Last I looked, it is not compatible with a lock up style torque converter.

*As a side note, Lockup converters are the correct type for all 4l60/700r4 units. If you decide to go to a 10 inch, non lock up converter, a special valve will need to be installed in the pump to prevent the trans from burning up*

I'd go Vigilante or ProTorque but they aren't cheap.

In my case, my converter company does 10 inch units. Because I trust this company, I use them exclusively. Edge Converters are quite popular also. They build 10 inch converters for much less money than Pro-Torque or Vigilante. I have no person experience with any of the 3 companies. Alot of options for you though.
