Is this a way around vats?
I hope this isn't a VERY dumb question.

I got a computer for my 86 auto, and the stick chip was in it. I just installed it figuring one size fitz all and these things happen:
1. torque converter does not lock up
2. shift light comes on and stays on above 25 mph till the key is recycled.
3. the trans didn't seem to shift at normal points.
4. hitting the brake seemed like the shift light was a little brighter as if it was dropping the signal to the shift solenoid for the 4+3
so they aren't interchangeable
I appreciate that people try to disable vats by reprogramming or substituting with the correct resistance for the key but, from what I've read here, it can be more complicated as there are three components and reprogramming isn't listed as a means of bypassing the pass key ignition circuit in the write up.

If reprogramming does that too, then fine. But, if using a chip from a TPI without vats also works then it is a decision about cost and whether you want to keep the original chip, original.
Also, I realize that a chip from a standard shift might not work in an automatic, but is the reverse true? Would a chip for an automatic work in a 4+3 car?
