OK I just got my new short block home. I need info if anybody has it. Here goes, The crank is a Scat cast steel ( I didn't think that was possible with steel ) standard crank with bored throws for lightening. The rods are Prowler ( company not car) MWM CR35057 , 5140 steel. and the postons are Federal Mogul cast (ugh) 10-1 "claimer" pistons. Anybody have experience with these products ? The block is a 4 bolt bored 60 with the drivers side dipstick. All the parts are new and never been run. Couldn't pass on the price. Jeffie , Oh by the way all the parts came from Midwest Motorsports. :smash: :chevy :flag
You positive the crank isn't a nodular iron cast unit? That would be my guess. Rods are fine, pistons are as you say - ugh. I wouldn't want to take them to much rpm or put much power on them; for a budget swap a set of KB would do nicely (just follow the gapping guidelines). My other concern would be the block itself; 60 over is quite a bit, and I doubt the block was sonic checked on a claimer motor. It could be fine, it could not. No way to tell without either running it or pulling it apart.
If the motor fits your needs I would just try it the way it is and see if you are happy with it. Keep the compression down/timing non-agressive with those pistons, and not to much rpm and you will be fine.
I am thinking the setup should be fine with my stock intake, should I be concerned about the internal engine balance being off since the rods are rather BEEFY? :chevy
I checked the Midwest motorsport catalog and it states " New ,not reground cast steel chevy crankshaft, Lightening holes in all rod throws." part # SCA350.Jeffie. Still should I have it balanced or just run a fluiddampr?
