Default 700 R4 shifter seal

The seal around the shifter shaft is leaking on my 86. Can I change it without removing the trans?

Yes. You will need the special tool to do it in the car. KD and others make it for about $30. The early shafts tend to pit. I would suggest buying a new, improved shaft from the dealer to avoid having to do the job 2x. The shaft runs approx $13. If you need the part number, I can go in the garage and get it.

The part # would be great. I replaced the front and rear seals but not that one. I would think you would have to drop the pan.

The part number for the shaft is the same for both ac-delco and gm. It is:
24210712
I do not have the number for the seal. It comes in the rebuild kits.
Should only be a couple of bucks from the dealer. That seal fits everything rwd that gm made for 35 years. Very common.
You do have to drop the pan to remove the nut and clip. You also have to file the heavy burr off the inside edge to remove it.

Thanks. I think I have a seal. Do you know the part # for the tool?

Unfortunately, I do not. Because I do everything on the bench, I simply use a screwdriver to pry it out, and tap the new one in with a 9/16 socket. Hopefully someone here has a good number for the tool and post's it up. I often see them on the tool rack at the local dicount parts store. No one ever buys them and they are usually covered in dust. They are handy though.
