Recently I removed the radio control unit from my 90 coupe, and also the DIC.I then needed to move the power seat to get to the bolts,to remove it,so I hooked the battery back up and turned the key to the on position with the DIC still out.Wrong thing to do!Well according to the shop manual, this will cause a code 42,which is what I have. The INFL REST light is on all the time now, along with the seat belt light.Shouldn't I be able to clear this code?I've tried several times to clear it by grounding the A and K terminals on the ALDL for 3 seconds,as suggested by the shop manual, and still have it.Could this be another problem with the SIR system?I'm just a little leary of troubleshooting on this system for fear of screwing something up.I know there is a lot of expertise out there on this forum,so can anyone give me a suggestion?I love driving this car,but its definately a pain to work on!I know I can probably just pull the bulbs out to cure this problem but I would think this code could be cleared. Thanks in advance.
Code 42 is Indicator lamp circuit, open circuit. Most times the trouble is with the frame sensors that go bad. They are located on the frame close to the firewall. This only occurs on 90 cars. The connector for the frame sensors comes into the drivers compartment down at the footwell area. You have to peel the carpet back down there and the wire connector is there. It is a 3 pin connector BUT BEFORE DOING ANY WORK ON THIS SYSTEM DISSCONNECT THE BATTERY!!! When you pull the connector apart you will see a small notch inside the connector face this toward the bottom. Now get an Ohm Meter single pin at top PIN 1 lower left 2 and lower right 3 ohm pins 1 and 2 they should be about 10,000 ohms not exact pin 1 and 3 the same 2 and 3 less than 1 if any readings are out of range then the frame sensor is bad. They are about 60 bucks from GM POST ANY QUESTIONS OR FINDINGS Maybe I can help you farther Pipe
Well I tried bogus's suggestion with no luck.Pipe,I would like to try your idea but I'm not exactly clear on what your saying. You say to check the resistance on the connector from the frame sensors located under the driver side carpet in the footwell. Can you PM me some clearer instructions on what pins and resistances? Thanks for the responses.
Bob how ya makin out with the fix? Look a little further up than down in the footwell it might be up closer to the carpet line. The sensor wires come through the firewall inside a rubber grommet. The colors are white, dk. blue and black with a red stripe. The connector is a off yellow color. I've heard these do not fit tightly and sometimes come apart. I would still test the plug coming from the frame sensor just to make sure with the ohm meter. Let me know how your makin out. Bill
