I have a 92 Bright Red roadster. Love it, but would like to find a product that will reduce or eliminate the swirl marks in the finish. Anybody had any experience with a particularly good product?
I have had great success with 3M. I contacted them 3 years ago and they told me what 3
products to apply.
1. Finese IT II (it's a 1500 micro cut). I apply it with an orbital buffer.
2. Perfect IT Foam Pad Polishing Glaze. Again, I use an orbital buffer.
3. Perfect IT Hand Glaze. Applied by hand.
These three products work in harmony together. The first one removes spider webbing (swirl marks)
in the paint. The second does the same but to a lesser degree. It's job is to put back the shine
the first product remove. And the 3rd, well, this is the icing on the cake. It turns the paint into
glass with a terrific reflection. Downside, each application takes me 2 hours. 6 hours total. So
that;s why I do this once a year in the spring. I freshen the shine up during the year with the
Hand glaze.
Don't buy into hype. "Any other swirl removers can dmage your clearcoat..." is marketing hype. Swirl marks are light scrathes (in the paint, not on top) usually caused by aggressive buffing with a high speed buffer. There are other type of swirls though. To get rid of swirls (along with any other kind of defect in the surface) you have to take down the paint around the defect. For swirls, it's a very light buff. I like to use an offset foam pad on a high speed with a very light abrasive or medium chemical paint cleaner. No product can properly "remove" a swirl or scratch without taking down the paint around it - they can only hide it with oil.
