I need to get a scanner for my 99 Caddy SLS which is OBD II. What OBC II scanners can you guys recommend? I was thinking of something inexpensive just to pull the codes and reset the light. Any suggestions?
If all you want to do is pull codes than the Discounters can set you up for less than a 100 Bucks and if doesn't work, you can take it back. I think Poop Boys had something for about $60 in the Sunday Funnies. I've found that knowing what the Code is and then following the Trouble Tree in the Service Manual is adequate. I've had no need to datalog any of my OB2 cars (yet) and when there's a hard code, that's pretty much the case regardless of the system - it's the friggin' intermittents that cause the heartaches. I don't know where you are, but some of the emissions equipment on that '99 might still be under warranty too.
Thanks. I'm in NY and I think there might be an 8 year warranty on the emission parts. I'll have to verify that though. I actually found a simple scanner on ebay yesterday and bought it. I also found that on this particular car, you don't need the scanner, you can pull the codes through the Driver's Information Center on the dash.
I just had the splice pack and the PCM replaced on the car before she threw the SES light. Its a low mileage car and the light came on after I opened her up on the highway so I am thinking its a carbon related problem. Other than the light being on, the car seems to running normally. We'll see when I pull the codes.
Walmart has an obd2 scanner, its 69usd, says it will reset SES. I have a 2000 STS that had a SES lite. I needed a cat, I then had a friend reset the code after I replaced it.

I actually found the procedures to pull the codes and reset the light without the scanner for my Caddy. Did it last night, seems I may need an O2 sensor on the number 1 bank. I reset the light and we'll see if it comes back.
And I found a scanner on eBay for $15.00 which got really good reviews. I'll let you know how it works.
