I am in the process of doing this, it looks like the exhaust has to be dropped off the exhaust manifolds to have room to reach the cable on the transmission? Is there any other way? The exhaust manifold nuts are rusted solid. It looks as though the stud will break.

I remember when I broke 2 studs on my Ypipe trying to remove the Ypipe. I had to replace the whole system with Hooker Headers.
Yeah I was thinking about that! A nice time to just put headers on. I'd like to use the car this week though. I'm going to try hooking the cable up, inside the pan. I can reach enough to remove the bolt that holds the cable down on the trans.
A few years ago I dropped the front Y to remove my stock headers for porting and had no real problems with getting the nuts off the studs.
Of course I soaked them well with PB Blaster the night before and again about an hour before tackling the job. Still I guess they were not rusted too solidly.
You will run the risk of breaking off the studs if they look very rusted though.
According to my '88 GM Shop Manual it isn't necessay to drop the front Y to remove the TV cable. The diagram shows the TV cable going into the R Rear of the A4.

The studs for the stock y pipe are removable on stock manifolds. They can be replaced with new ones. They simply screw onto the bottom of the stock manifolds. A good muffler shop sells them individually.
Can't think of any reason to change one unless it's broken, but there's plenty of room to drop the pan and access the cable. Does help to have it on a lift, but what operation under the car isn't easier that way? Once the pan is off you can pull on it and make sure it springs back - if so, I'd simply make sure it's adjusted correctly and leave it as is. New fluid and a good gasket makes more sense.
When I do the adjustment the cable always adjusts fully extended. The shift points are very close together then. If I retract the cable to half way, the car shifts pretty normally. Pete said the cable was worn out and to change it.
I got the cable changed. I used a pen magnet on the bolt. It was out almost as fast as you could turn it with your fingers. My old cable was bad. I installed the new cable and did the readjustment, it only advanced one or two clicks forward. I was reluctant to button the trans. pan up because I thought it should adjust farther out. But that's all it needed. My stock cable was to worn there to adjust that little. The car is working great!
At my last HPDE the car lost fourth. The valve body got dirty. Also the TV cable extend out to much. It was worn and all the WOT overcame it.
