Default 700R4 issues

The 700R4 in my '89 was rebuilt @ 86,000 miles, and a B&M shift kit was installed.
The car now has 146,000+, and last week when manually shifting from 3rd (D) to 2nd, something popped and the trans just freewheeled. When I gave it gas, it revved up to match the speed/rpm of the tranny and started accelerating again.
The trans shifts fine up through the gears, hits passing gear, and burns rubber on the 1st to 2nd shift. However, if I pull the stick back to any lower gear at speed, it's like putting it in neutral. If I accelerate, it will eventually match speed with RPM and start picking up speed.
Any idea what I broke, and more important, how much it will cost to fix?

TIA.

Broken roller clutch maybe?
Definitely means go directly to the shop...do not pass go...in fact, the car may NOT even go :(

Actually it goes just fine. This happened before leaving Evansville for Effingham IL on Fun Fest day. That was a 250 mile or so round trip, and I've driven it probably 100 miles since that.

i have the same shift kit in my 86 too, i love it makes driving auto alot better the problem you are having sounds like what happened to me, the spring ring thing they give you to put the pressure regulator valve isnt strong enough to hold it up with the pressure, mine popped out and my tranny friend got a new stronger spring for me and it works fine now .
just check that out

the b&m kit has been known to fry trannies, you'd be much better off with the transgo
