Just wondering if it's normal for there to be some grinding when I throw it in reverse from a stop. Also, even when i slowly shift it into R, I can feel through the shifter the gear moving pretty quick, that's when I have to finesse the shifter into the R gear. The other gears shift fine other than being very loud during deceleration. Any fixes for this one with the good ol' Haynes manual?
Thanks!
That is pretty normal. Reverse isn't synchronized. Try shifting into a forward (2nd works well) gear before going in to reverse. Since the forward gears are all synchronized, that will stop the gears on the mainshaft from spinning.
I've never noticed that in mine and I've had it for a year. Granted the Transmission was completely rebuilt about 2.5 years ago. Now I did have an issue of grinding while shifting through the forward gears, but that's when I realized that the floor mat had crawled up under the clutch pedal and I wasn't able to push it in all the way.
My 87 did the same thing about a month after I bought it. It would go into the forward gears with no problems and was quiet. I thought at first it was the hydraulic system but I bled it a half-dozen times with no change. Turned out that the clutch was shot.
When my shop pulled the clutch assembly, the lining on the disc was down to the rivets. It was a CenterForce I clutch and the guy I bought the car from just didn't know how to drive a stick. Installed an new clutch setup and the grinding going into reverse went away.
Like wise thanks for the advise my 86 C4 just started grinding only when I shift into R gear can’t wait to try it for smoothe shifting what a relief the guy I got it from just replaced clutch 2 years ago so was unsure what this was
