How difficult is it to remove and clean the Throttle Body/Plenum/Intake Runners? I know mine is dirty as I cleaned just inside the Butterflies and the cleaning rag had quite a bit of black soot on it. I can only imagine how dirty it must be farther in. Second question: Why is it sooty?
You'll need to drain the coolant. For me that's the hardest part.
What year do you have? On my '85 the rest is just unbolting stuff. Really easy as long as you label everything and/or take pictures your first time through (especially where vacuum tubes go).

I would do the coolant bypass at this time if you havn't already. If not it can be done without draining the coolant, just plug up the lines temporarily. The throttle body removal is very simple. Buy the gaskets before you start.
Remove intake air duct.
Unscrew 4 screws.
Remove throttle cable.
Unplug TPS.
If you are pulling the bottom off where the IAC is then there is a method to resetting it again. Check the FSM.
Edit: I just noticed you had an 86. I am not sure about the process for your year. Hopefully someone else will fill in. Here is the link to my install.
