Default Engine Swap

question I've got an 84 crossfire I'am thinking of maybe swapping it out for something else, any ideas? if I put in an L98, a motor, wiring harness, ecm should be all I need right? One more thing , I've seen vettes in the forum that have just crate motors with carbs on them how was that done with all the wiring and computer stuff? looking at all you guys cars gets me thinking to much.

I'd skip the L98 and get an LT1 or LT4 if you want a factory fuel injected engine. If you don't care about fuel injection get a 406 or larger engine with a carb and have some fun...and get ready to take some bashing from forum members who think the CFI is the golden goose

if you switch to a cfi what do you do with the ecm and all the wiring ? I love carbs I've always messed around with them when I raced back in the day.

Default Tpi

I have a complete TPI system you can install on your engine , complete from the computer forward. The wiring harness includes headlights, lights, heater, emissions and alternator wiring, etc. The 84 and 85 had separate harnesses for the car and the engine, and in 86, they made it one harness.
I have everything:
Computer,
wiring harness,
Cam,
Manifold,
Runners,
Plenum,
Throttle body,
Fuel rail,
fuel lines,
Injectors,
Distributor,
EGR solenoid
EGR valve,
smog pump,
Cold start injector,
water outlet
Coolant sensor
cold start sensor
MAT sensor
MAF sensor
Throttle pos. sensor
Exhaust manifold, R.H.

What I don't have:
new gasket set,
MAF burnoff relay,
MAF power relay,
throttle cable and pedal,
Chip for the computer.
New lifters for the cam,
the clamp that secures the EGR hose on the exhaust manifold.
the stock chip won't work in your car, so get one at the chevy dealer for an 88 camaro 350 TPI
( about $60 unless you get one on ebay).
The relays are about $7.50 each, and the throttle cable is $25.
Your car will be able to pass emissions with this stuff, and give you a big kick in the acceleration department without pulling your engine.
I need about $1000 for all of it, + shipping.
If you send me your email, I can send you pics of it all b4 you make up ur mind.
Buy the Chevy TPI fuel inj. swapper's guide at Barne's and Noble bookstore, and in it it says the TPI will run with the LT1 motors if you set it up right. He gives you all the info to hot rod your engine to make it run
LET ME KNOW!!!!

Whether you are considering swapping engines or just the FI systems, it is a lot of work and expense for no gain. As for the long blocks, the 1984 Crossfire and the 1985 Tuned port engines are the same. If you need a fuel injection system that will flow more air and that will make more power than the CFI ever could, the TPI isn't the answer. Go to a different FI with more potential than either of these systems. And at that point, unless it is worn out, there is no need to swap engines. The L83 is just a basic 350 engine just like the L98. For mild improvements in performance, you might be surprised by what can be had from the ol' Crossfire.

RACE ON!!!

W89,

I agree with CFI. You could swap out the stock ECM for an EBL from DynamicEFI. www.dynamicefi.com. This will give you the option of running either the TBI or PFI induction systems. Lots you can do with the Xfire.
Hey, Nitrous Sam, does this sound like I'm bashing W89?

Dominic,
Your post is not bashing but this type of topic relating to the crossfire typically gets into a heated discussion pretty quickly. I say that ultimately it depends on the goal of the car owner. The CFI can be made to work fairly well but there is a wall you will hit with it when it comes to airflow...if your goal is to exceed that performance level you are just going through the motions and spending time, money and effort on something that may not allow you to reach your goal. If the goal is to build a car that runs 13's which is VERY realistic with a CFI...you are on the right track. If you goal is to run 11's I would recommend looking at other options.

Nothing in here I would disagree with. I think it may even be possible to see a Xfire run 12's. With my 105mph trap, I could probably get there with DRs. However, the CW on this forum is that 13's would be ridiculous for a Xfire. Owners like CFI and myself have put our efforts into showing its not only realistic as you say, but been there done that. Its just that whenever the subject of the Xfire comes up, the CW around here is to chuck the CFI and go with a carb or TPI setup.
If you're a DIYer, you'll probably get more bang for the buck from a Xfire. Let me suggest to W89 that if you want to see what people are doing with TBI motors, go to www.thirdgen.org. Plenty of smart people there.

Dominic,
I respect your position and think we are both right on this topic. 12 Second time slips with a CFI are certainly obtainable but I believe that is where the wall becomes steep.

Yes. Absolutely. Going from 15's to high 13's is less wortk than going to low 13's. 12's steeper still. I have no illusions of going further than that.
Even high 12's ain't bad.

My responses in Bold.

Bottom end is pretty good for the rpm range you'll be operating at. I routinely go to 6000rpm with no problem

or get a new one-questions- keep heads or chunck em?

Definitely get better heads. This is where it all starts.

Depends on what you're doing. You can have them bored out and install BB Injectors. I would very definitely install an external FPR and parallel plumb the TBs. anything else you would recomend ?

Upgrade the ECM and learn about tuning

I got my '84 into the 11s easily, I took my CFI engine & set it on a stand. I installed a carbed SB 427 with a 3200 stall & 375 gear. It is a blast to drive, not the most streetable, but the power makes up for any inconvenience.

What does an engine swap do to the digidash? Do all the instruments still work if you switch out the engine and ECM?
