Is a High Performance Mass Air Flow Sensor worth it?
I have heard a few mixed reviews. Some good, some say it isnt even close to worth the money.
What do you guys think? What type of gains would come out of it, and how much better is it really?
Thanks in advance,
Andy

I think that our stock ones are perfectly fine and will do their job. I think I read that it is when you start enlarging cubic inches that is when you would gain from one. I guess the ones we have can already flow more air than our stock engines can suck in.
Then again.... i could be wrong.

FWIW, here's my $0.02.
I think the Granatelli MAF claims are highly exaggerated. They frequently claim huge horsepower increases but when you research it, those tests are from an F-body, which in stock form has a severely restricted air intake system. ANY changes to improve airflow on that car usually helps a lot. The C4 Corvette, on the other hand, actually has a pretty good stock air intake system, at least with a new/clean filter. I have not seen any independent dyno tests comparing their unit to a stock MAF on a C4. Wonder why? ;)
I don't know about the "improved" electronics of the Granatelli MAF. All I do know is that some tuners, including Vinci Hi-Performance in Orlando, do not have a lot of respect for this unit. Roger Vinci says he won't even work on a car with one of these installed. That's a little extreme, perhaps, but you get the point.
Their own dyno tests show that moderate gains (more so on built motors) can be made by simply swapping out the metal ends of the stock MAF with less restrictive polymer units. Since the screens are incorporated into the end pieces, this eliminates those and also helps reduce heat soak since the polymer doesn't hold/transfer heat like the metal components. Plus its a lot less expensive and you can go back to stock anytime since they just bolt on. I installed them on my GS and it was an easy 10 minute job, and that's only because I'm old and slow.
If anyone can prove me wrong with verifiable dyno results, I'd gladly considering swapping MAFs. But I'm an old Missouri boy so you'll have to "show me" first.

Ya... they have a test for a LT1 Z28, and a C5 corvette.
So nothing for the C4s.
I am curious myself to see if it is worth it.
Found a place that sells them for $280 (cheapest I could find). But I don't know if I want to spend 280 for like 3-5 hp.
Of course... they SAY 15-20hp :bs or is it?

I don't think I'd buy one to replace a working stock one, but will probably consider it when the stock one bites the dust! :yesnod:
