Default 88 directional flasher location?

My left front marker light will blink very slowly when I put the directional on. The right is fine. I changed the bulb but that didn't change anything. With the hazard flasher on everything blinks fine. I think it's the flaher but my mechanic wants to replace the turn and hazard assembly switch. Any electrical wizards out there? I know nothing about this but at least I want to change the directional hazard first. The mechanic wants to pull the steering wheel off.

The turn flasher can is located behind the RH side of the IP to the left of the fuse block.

If you drop the hush panel you should be able to see the can hanging from a harge wire bundle. It has a Dk Blu wire in and a Ppl wire out.

Default Directional Flasher

I found my directional flasher under the passenger side of the dash tucked up between the compuler and the center section. It was basically loose hanging by it's plug. It was sort of difficult to find as it's real tight up in there.
I would at least replace it first before messing with the other stuff.

It isn't the flasher. The same flasher does both the left and right sides. Since the right side works properly the flasher has to be good. Look for a bad connection in the wiring, grounds, bulb contacts, etc. on the left side.

RACE ON!!!

What if he checked that and it looked OK? Does that mean it's the turn and hazard assembly switch?

Thanks you have an 88 too. I will change the flasher first. It's only $7.00.

check your rear bulb sockets too. gm put some kind of grease in them and it gets hard over time. clean them and put silicone grease in them. make sur all bulbs are the same. look in your owners man. for rite bulb.

The bulb lights and when the hazards are put on they blink fine. There are two different flashers in an 88. A hazard flasher and a direction flaher. When I put the left directional on it blinks very slowly, like once a minute or not at all. So the bulb is new and works. There has to be good connectors and juice to the bulb. This mechanic says it must be in the mechanism located in the steering column. I hope he's wrong.

Good advice.

It is possible that the hazzard flasher gets enough current draw to funciton properly while the turn flasher does not.

There is an 11-pin connector behind the I/P to the right of the steering column. The Lt Blu wire goes the the L front turn signal bulb; the Dk Blu wire goes to the R front turn signal bulb.

If you open that connector and jumper from the Dk Blu pin to the Lt Blu wire and hit the right turn signal you will see if the left turn light flashes normally. If so the problem is in the switch in the column; if it flashes the same the problem is likely near the turn signal bulb socket.

If you don't have a GM Shop Manual, drop me an email and I'll take a pic of the schematic of that wiring.

You have a lot of knowledge in this field. I have little to no knowledge of electrical problems. I guess you have ruled out the directional flasher and think the problem is in the sterring column. The bulb checks out fine. The connector is good. So will I be wasting time changing the flasher? Should I let this guy pull my steering wheel off? I also noticd that when I flip the headlights on the left turn signal light in the dash comes on. Does that indicated a bad flasher? And why would the left direction work very slowly. If it was a short wouldn't it stop working? I'm confused!

The dash light comes on because there is curent flowing but not enough to heat the flasher element and open the flasher contacts to cause the normal "blinking" effect. I'm not sure why the turn bulb is comming on with the headlights; it may be due to leakage in one of the bulbs/sockets.

Considering what it will cost to have the wheel pulled and R&R the Turn/Hazzard Switch Assy, I would replace the turn flasher.

It takes the combination of current through both the front & the rear turn bulbs to cause sufficient heating inside the Turn Flasher for the normal flashing to occur. So, if there is a problem with the rear bulb/socket/wiring, it will also effect the front turn signal.

BTW, is the left front marker light comming on bright when you hit the left turn signal?

This is nuts. I just was messing with the car and the directionals started working fine. I thought it fixed itself until I turned the headlights on and the left directional stopped blinking. I think the flasher is going. I will start there. I did some reading and I guess one side of the flasher can fail.

Just for S & Gs, check out the brightness of the left side marker first, compared with the right side, when the turn signal is on vs off.

If you see a difference, swap marker bubs between L & R sides.

Default bulbs

if you tow a trailer with any car, connecting the trailer wiring makes the turn signals flash faster. more bulbs, less resistance.
soooo if it's flashing slower, check the other bulbs attached to the turn signal, the back one, the marker light.
there is obviously high resistance in that circuit.
check the white marker light bulb, if it doesn'tcome on, switch em
check grounds for the bulbs
if all else fails, tap the instrument panel right next to the headlight switch just to the right of it.
sounds dumb, but works on mine occasionally
