I am going to remove my digital dash to replace an odometer motor that went out. While I'm at it, I'm going to replace the bulbs, check for cracks in the solder joints, & clean it. My question is, has anyone one experienced any other problems due to removing the dash?
I'm aware that wiring harnesses that have stayed in a certain position for long periods of time tend to have problems once they have been moved.
Thaks in advance
When you pulling the dash cluster apart you have to be careful not to damage the LCD. The LCD's need to be laying flat and in their slot, if not they will crack when you tighten the dash! This isn't hard once you see it, but you need to pull out and disassemble everything (even if you don't think you touch the LCD) to make the LCD are in the proper place. If you need help, I have a lot of experience put back together the dash cluster. If your looking for a used odometer I have one for sale.
I have had mine out of my 1984 about 4 times for different reasons, and have never had any problems. It is just important to make sure you take your time laying it flat on the steering column and it is a good idea to put something soft on the column like a towel or whatever. It takes about 20 min or so to remove the cluster.
Re: Question About Digital Dash Removal?? (lee.anderson)
I've removed the dash in my 89 twice. Not that big of a deal if you remove the dash pad first (makes it easier to get your hand on the connector so you can disconnect it). Take care to keep yourself grounded when you're working on the cluster. One of those static wrist straps is a good idea.
I appreciate the input guys!! I have solder experience via aircraft training :D
The removal process was my main concern. I also have Gordon Kilebrew's book on how to remove/repair the cluster, but as we all know, sometimes the manuals make it look easier that it is.
Thanks for the heads-up on the LCD cracking issues. I'll be sure to watch that and the ESD (electric static discharge) issues. Definitely, the wrist strap is a must.
