Ignition Problem Found
The distributor cap and rotor are Borg-Warner (made in USA) units with about 1500 miles on them. I set the engine at TDC and pulled the distributor cap to see where the rotor was pointing as I couldn't get the timing adjusted correctly. What I found was the post between the coil and the rotor had its tip broken off. It appearently has been this way for awhile as the metal strip on the rotor the post rides on had grooves in it. The post orginally had a rounded head that appeared to be bonded on as it is of a different material than the rest of the post. I guess the rotor and the post finally quit transfering the coil's output effeciently. I did try to find the tip but so far I have had no luck. I may have to pull the distributor and see if I can shake it out.
No real direction with this thread. I just found this to be an unusual mechanical problem. At least it's one I have never encountered before.
