I need some help deciding on what to do with my exhaust. I have a 1988 auto that currently has the stock system. Coming up pretty some I'm going to be putting in a cam, doing some head work, and capping it off with a super ram. I figure with the better intake system, I'll need to open up the exhaust. At first i thought about going to true duals with the stock manifolds, but now i am leaning towards a set of Hooker longtubes, gutting the main cat, and adding some high flow mufflers. I want to know from everyone's experience what the best senario is and if the ladder what kind of mufflers. The only hard part is that i want to spend <$1000. Any opinions appreciated.
I just gutted my cats and will soon have muffler elims with me doing all the work. Soon I would like longtubes, but right now I cant due to $$, im just 16 after all. Can I smooth down the welds and other stuff inside the stock headers to make them flow better?
I thought about smoothing out the welds in my stock manifolds too. I think the headers will be worth the $ tho. I'm just 17 also, so i am on a tight budget. I've been saving money and would like to save anywhere i can. I hope to get the other stuff for Christmas and graduation :D . Plus my dad is an engine builder and a hotrod nut (so it makes it easier :blueangel: ).
So i think i am on the right track then. Maybe some more opinions, the more the better.

I think you've got it right.... you'll run great with what you have specified above. Some affordable mufflers that you might want to look at: Magnaflow's are somewhere around $ 160 for a pair, and they're low restriction and great for performance and have received some great reviews from other forum members.
Hooker Aerochambers also might be an option for you... they're low cost at only roughly $ 120 for a pair, and their advertised flow #'s are the best I've seen. They are a 3 chamber type muffler that is also a fairly quiet muffler in idle situations. However, I have heard reports that the resonance is higher with these mufflers.... but dunno for sure. I'm in the same boat, trying to decide which one from the above two selections.
I bought my Hooker Super Comps from Summit for $450. I am going to use a factory LT1 exhaust system since it's 2.75" tubing, with the resonator replaced with high flow 3" bullet cats. At the end I'll use 3" two chamber flowmasters with some type of tip. I haven't decided on those yet. All together I should only spend around $750-$800. I'm going to use this setup on my '88 convertible.
I ran dual straight pipes on my 83 Firebird, had a 400 bored 30 over with a choppy cam in it, and you could hear me coming a darned mile away. I got pulled over in Byron,IL, idling at the light!
I told him it was a high performance set up for my engine...LOL!
How about using a Corsa cat back dual exhaust system for an LT1 car, LT1 exhaust manifolds and two pipes that go from the exhuast manifolds to the Corsa. Go to the long tubes later. This just might get you in under 1000.
800 Corsa, LT1 manifolds 75, interconnecting pipes 125 (this might be a bit low).
ImportEater has a setup thats also worth checking out.
