On My 86 I have a new cam installed 281/296...Now the Timing specs are SAE and .050..The Sae is BTC 27 and the other is -5 my question is what should the timing be on my L98 with this cam?? That can't be the timing specs for the engine can it?? I'm Trying to Understand all this..Did a search and I know what SAE is but confused about timing specs... Thanks
It's a Melling Mtc-1 Lift is .281/.296..valve lift .422/.444..lobe ctr 107/117..Hyd lifters...I was told it should'nt be Too lopey...I have a miss and wanted to see if 4* BTDC was O.K. with this...Thanks
I don't have any experience with this motor but only your engine will know what's a good initial timing 4, 6, 8 BTDC who knows? With all the slop going on everywhere, the damper maybe being off a few degrees to the indicator it's going to be trail and error thing.
Now in relation to new cam, it's not SUPPOSED to change where you set initial timing. Back in my carb days initial timing changes with a different cam did have some effect on power but it was minimal and was more for idle quality, or lack there of, than anything.
How initial timing affects a computer controlled ignition is something I have no experience with.
Seem to me that is a adventized duration 281/.296. It is not .281/.296 @.05 that is a big different. It is a small cam for what it is. Probably will work fine the stock long runner intake.
I have been told that fuel injected cars like small duration and huge lift. I was told that you shouldnt go over 230 duration at .05 but the biggest lif possible. I have seen many with like 234 at .05 and .501 lift which i am told would work perfect. I can't say anything about the timing issue but thats my two cents on the cam selection.
