Default Speedometer Calibrator help (ake ERA)

Hi,

1992 A4

If you've installed the Speedometer Calibrator that zip-products sells (also known as the Abbott Electric Ratio Adapter), please give me your advice:

I bought a rear diff along with the ERA almost 2 yrs ago when this forum did a group buy but I never got around to installing the ERA until now. I've searched the forum archives and it seems that all of those old threads are gone now...

There was discussion about throwing some codes (can't remember which) after installing the ERA and I want to make sure that I install it in the correct place to avoid those issues. I called Abbott Enterprises who makes the ERA and spoke to someone that was clearly not very knowledgeable and they said to splice it in after the ESM, similar to how aftermarket cruise controls are added to cars. Questioning the accuracy of this information I called zip-products and they said to install the ERA right by the VSS on the tranny. The manual from Abbott Enterprises also says to install it just after the VSS but also says to "call our support team" BEFORE installing the ERA on a vehicle with an automatic transmission which is why I called them...

So: Where did you install yours and did you get error codes? Any advice or tips you can offer will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Mark

(btw, I love the torque on the 3.54 compared to the 2.59 although the whine is a little more than I'd like (time to do some soundproofing...)

Mark,
You talked to me about this, forget what the person at Abbott's told you, mount the ERA right where I told you about and you will not have any problems. Do not throw the instructions away though, it has the formula in there for the mileage and where to set the dip switches. You have to put it before the VSS signal goes into the ECM, you do not know what the ECM converts the signal to when it passes it through the BCM and then the speedo. The ERA only produces or manipulates the VSS pulse signal.

Thanks for jumping in and responding. Looking at your username, any relation to Abbott Enterprises? j/k

I appreciate your help the other day on the phone and will follow through with the install just after the VSS. Not sure what happened to this forum in the last ~18mo but those old posts seem to be deleted/lost. I sure would be interested in reading why people were getting codes thrown after the install (perhaps they called Abbott Ent & followed their ill advice...).

Thanks again!
Mark
