Default TV Cable

I just read a few posts regarding the TV cable and now have a question to ask regarding my 84 and the 700R transmission.

Before my transmission went south last July 2005, I recall driving the car at speeds between 60/70 MPH or so. When I hit the throttle the transmission would "kickdown" for lack of a better word and the car would take off like a bat out of hell.

After the transmission was rebuilt, I no longer have that "kickdown" that I had previously when I hit the throttle. I did have a shift kit installed, not sure if this has any relevance.

Should I have that kickdown? I think so. If so what needs to be corrected?

I could speculate, but will wait for a definitive answer.

Sounds like the TV cable needs adjustment.

A part of that 'kickdown' you were feeling is caused by the torque converter clutch coming unlocked with throttle application.

Not saying this is your problem or anything definitive but you may want to be sure the TCC is still being controlled by the ECM itself and not just the pressure switch on the valve body.

Transmission shops seem to be notorious in getting this wrong.
It's ok on a regular car but it's not ok for a Vette.

The TV cable sets and adjusts the transmission line pressure.

It will have a small affect on the shift points and the shift 'quality' or how smooth or hard the shifts are.

There really is only ONE correct setting for it and that is achieved by using the procedure in the FSM.

That procedure will have you 'unlock' the TCC cable at it's bracket and slide it completely to the rear.
Get in the car, engine off and press the gas pedal to the floor.
The TV cable will 'rachet forward to the proper position and that's it.
It's a simple procedure.

Some folks will adjust it a click or two from there for their own personal taste.
If you have to move it a LOT from the factory speced. position there's something wrong with the transmission/pump/etc..

Another bit of info...

There are a few small changes/differences between the transmission that came in your Vette and a regular passenger car tranny.

THe servo is different and a couple of other things I can't think of at the moment.
Maybe "Pete K" can get in here and clarify this.
He rebuilds these trannys and is sharp on them.

ANyway, MOST shops build their trannys for a regular car and if you just buy one of them it won't have that handful of differences your Vette tranny has.
Then you Vette will drive like a Caprice instead of a Vette.

Many thanks for the valued information. I spoke to Pete over the summer, but on a different issue.

The TV cable adjustment seems straight forward and I will attempt it before weeks end.

Thank you again.
