Check the basics first. First, check the distributor connections and inspect the plug wires and boots for splits and cracks and make sure they are seated properly. If the wires look good, check their resistance. They should be less than 1000 ohms per foot of length. You can also attach your timing light to the other plug wires and see if any other cylinders have an odd pattern.
If none of the above solves the problem, start looking at the coil and/or ignition module. There is also a small circuit board inside the distributor that can go bad and cause all sorts of havoc (don't ask me how I know this ). The circuit board and ignition module cost about $60-70 for the pair, IIRC.
Do you have anyone nearby that has a good distributor you can try? Or pull the distributor and take it to a good mechanic to rebuild it, I did. Remember, the distributor is old and electronics do go bad.
Do you have the original distributor module in it sometime it goes bad and the car still run, but missing and poor performance, that happen to my, I drove it around and it finally stop on my coming home from work
