I'm new to the forum, because a couple of months again I trashed my '84 Corvette. I was going down the highway at about 65mph and the oil pressure dropped to zero. It just kind of bogged out, no lound noises or anything. It would not restart and I just had it towed to my home thinking the worst. I have checked the oil and it was a little low and seems to get that way after a little driving since I bought it a year ago. I added oil to the full level and tried starting it with no results. The oil pressure never goes up. Is this just an oil pump or have I blown the rest of it up. It is the stock engine with 103,000 miles. I was not racing it or revving it when it happened. Thanks for all your ideas. I have a friend I trust to change the oil pump if that's needed, but not sure how good of a troubleshooter he is. Thanks,
Yes, it turns over freely, but doesn't make much effor to start. Oil pressure never goes up at all. Checked the look of the oil and I don't see any water in it or anything.
It doesn't SOUND like you lost the oil pump. More likely a fuel pump/ ignition problem. The fuel pump wiring goes through the oil pressure sending unit. If you're oil pump went out at 65mph you should have locked up the engine.
The last thing I fixed on it was the belt tensioner. It had locked up solid. Would this have any effect on other systems? I relplaced it after only a block or so of driving while the tensioner was squeeling. Then I drove it 2 or 3 times more when I had this "oil pump" problem. Am I going to get an error code or something to lead me more to the fuel pump or distributor? Thanks.
The oil pressure likely went to zero because the engine quit.
Check out the 'simple' stuff before sweating a heavy duty job like the oil pump.
Getting fuel?
Getting spark?
Or??? was the engine pulling hard when the oil pressure dropped = Oh crap!
Good luck.
I just forced it to start. It started and I drove it to the gas station to get gas. I now have too much oil in it, which isn't a big deal. I guess I should look at the fuel pump and distributor. I replaced the spark plugs and cap recently. Thanks for all the good ideas so far.
