Default [1985] ThrottleBody Removal

It's been suggested that my slight idle problem might be solved by cleaning the IAC bore in the bottom of the throttle body. I also noticed that the coolant hose on the bottom of the TB looks like its about to puke coolant all over my engine. I'd like to remove the TB- so I can clean the IAC housing (and TB) completely, and replace that small hose.

So my question is: What is the minimum amount of coolant I will need to drain to do this? Can I just unclamp the hose and point it into a bucket? Will there even be coolant resting in there after the car sits for a few weeks? I just flushed and filled the coolant a little while back when I put on the new waterpump, and I really don't want to do that again.

Also - will I need to burp the system then?

long explanation... sorry. TIA

Best to drain it down a couple of gal - use clean milk cartons to reuse after done, even after draining you'll still have some coolant spill from the hose @ TB, just use some rags to catch.

Yes you'll need to burp after done.

also make sure you have the proceedure for reset the iac/tps, etc after your done.

why not just pull the cooling lines and point them upward so gravity will preven the coolant from flowing all over the place? Its been a very long time since I had a stock t/p/i with the coolant line in the throttle body. Hope this helps.

I've done this several times and it works fine. The hose to the TB only drips about a tablespoon of coolant - I just placed a towel underneath to catch the drips. No mess.

Another idea is to do a throttle body by-pass, but I'm not sure I'd recommend that. The hardware located in front of the engine makes that hose do some strange bends that just can't be good for coolant flow. But, it makes removing the TB a snap.

Do the bypass just get about 3' of 5/8" hose (think right size?HELP GUYS). you can have enough room to route it around easy and just cut off the excess.

There's no issue with routing the hose from the heater valve to the manifold, but it requires some bending to connect to the manifold. That's the rub; the unusual twists wind up collapsing the hose at the manifold entrance when warm. Just my 2 cents worth.

Yep, not much coolant will come out. Make sure the IAC pintle tip is no further than 1 1/8" from the flange when the IAC is reinstalled. Make sure the IAC gasket is in good shape or make one from gasket paper. As suggested, reset the IAC when finished. I didn't see a need to bypass the TB coolant other than just another coolant hose you don't have to worry about leaking. If the hose is in bad shape a bypass is a good idea.

Thanks for the input.

It seems like the consensus is that I can just take the hose off and not much coolant will come out. I'll wrap the area in towels to catch that. I just wanted to make sure that gallons of it wouldn't pour out.

I'm not really interested in a throttle body bypass, I will replace that lower hose though... I'll just need a few extra rags for that.
