The rear/post cat O2 sensors might throw a code. I believe it is better to install hiflow cats in the original cats place. With the original cats "hollow" it will cause a turbulance in flow. There will be little HP gain either way. JMO

I know there will be a richer/more unpleasant smell to the exhaust with the cats "hollow" or removed. Perhaps someone that has done this with there 96 can help, to be certain.

I believe you would need a tune to correct for the deleted post cat O2 sensors, so no codes would be thrown..

If the car you're working on is a 96 (you need to specify), you have an OBD2 system (the only C-4 that does) THere is an o2 sensor behind the cats that will throw codes AND change the way it runs (and not for the better). On road, I can think of no reason to ever gut the cats. they are very large HIGH flow units, that have almost no restriction. Except for a little more noise, you'll never notice any difference. The days of the high restriction cats ended in the 80's

I'd leave it alone, at least until you decide to install long tubes.

Have you considered hi-flow cats instead of removal? The HP degradation is minimal and you won't have to mess with the whole sensor situation. This is what I'm considering when mine decide to go (It ain't broke....yet).

Has anyone else tried these?

I agree; don't get me wrong, removing the cats is not worth much in terms of horsepower and you're better off getting bullet cats so you can save the hassle, be able to pass emissions should you ever need to, and still get the exact same performance gains. Unless you're like me and really trying to get the car as light as humanly possible, then you shouldn't simply rip them out.

If it ain't broke don't fix it.

Unless you have a master plan, leave them alone until you are ready to execute the entire plan.

or better yet, how many miles? You could always donate them to me, so I can replace my high mileage stockers when they finally go.
