Last night on my way home...my dash went dark (totally out). Then it came back...did it again...and then worked fine. Today...it kinda tweeked...you could still see...stuff...but certainly could not read it...then it went dark...came back and has worked fine ever since.
What do you think? Is it on the verge of melt down :cry or is this symptom of something else...like a loose wire or something?
Did your high beam light and turn signal lights come on? If so, you lost your ground, probably at the c100 connecter. Just splice a new ground and it should work.
Most likely you have an unsoldered pin on the bottom circuit board. Age relaxed spring pressure on the top board connector on the pin that carries lamp current (closest to the center of the circuit board) causes an increase in the connection resistance and the lamp current makes even more heat which reduces the spring tension some more until finally the pin gets so hot it unsolders itself and your dash goes dark. Resoldering isn't the answer because you need a new connector . I soldered a small length of hookup wire
(#24) between these boards on the centermost pin and socket and I will never have that problem again. See http://www.batee@umr.edu for a good description of cluster removal. There is one row of pins that plug into a connector that connects the two boards together and the pin closest to the center of the board is the culprit.
