Default Rack & pinion ratios....

Hi.....what is the stock ratio for a 95 Cpe? Is there a quicker ratio box that can be used from previous years? Is ther any modifications that need to be done to use the quicker ratio box?

There were only two steering options.
Std and a faster ratio rack that came with the Z51 package.

Top of my head;
3 1/2 turns lock to lock on the std and 2 3/4 on the Z51.
Believe racks are straight swap if from year series

I read that the quick rack was only found on the Z51 cars, but I looked up steering rates in a Corvette book I have from the late 80's and it listed some of the Z52 suspension cars with quick steering ratios.

The rack I just bought is 2 turns lock to lock, and it came from a 17 inch wheel convertible with Z52 suspension. So if you want one, they can be found, and not just on Z51 cars. (And I'm putting mine in a 91 ZR1 so if you wanted it you could do it too)

The slow rack is 2 1/3 turns.

fast = 13.0:1 ratio
slow = 15.x:1 ratio

I also read the quick rack was phased out after 89 because cars were getting faster and made to be softer suspension-wise with slower steering as the standard to remove twitchiness at high speeds.

89+ years all have the same rack regardless of suspension options

Hey guys,

I've been meaning to start a thread about this for a long time.
Hope you don't mind LT1Vette.... if I borrow yours.

I have a '91 with the 'slow' box. I have an '84 with the 'fast' box.
84= Much Better Feel

What is the part number for the FASTER RATIO Rack that will fit my '91 with no modifications?

Is it the ZR1 rack????

Where's the best = cheapest place to get one?

I think this would be an excellent mod for my '91.

Apparently a few were left over from '88 however. My early '89 Z51 has fast ratio. 2 turns lock to lock.

The fast steering rack that will fit post 88 cars was only available from 88 through mid 89 on Z-51 cars. The rack is 2 turns lock to lock and has code "NS" on the pinion cover. The standard rack is 2.5 turns. The part number for the NS rack is 26044836, service part number 26011480 and was discontinued on Z-51's half way through 89. Pre 88 racks will not fit on post 88 cars. I just put a fast rack on my 93. It was a rebuilt unit from TRW and it was NOT easy to find.

Cheapest way for me was at a salvage yard.... I didn't want to eat the $150 core charge at steeringrack.com since I think I'll want to sell my 91 with the original rack as a spare part when the time comes.

My opinion is different - I think 88's with 17 inch wheels came with either Z51 or Z52 suspension options -and I found a convertible with 17" wheels on car-part.com at a yard. Since yards don't know RPO codes, to tell me anything else about the car, I had the yard turn it for me before buying it, and came up with just under 2 turns lock to lock - that sort of said to me, the Z52 has the quick steering also. There were enough 88's listed that had 17 inch wheels to be able to get one from a car with under 60000 miles too.

Hate to beat a dead horse but here's a neat write up from caranddriver on the 3 different suspensions and it mentions that Z52 also had the quick steering.

http://www.caranddriver.com/roadtest...ariations.html

From this page it says:
The next step up is the new Z52 suspension. For an additional $470, you get a solid and thicker front anti-roll bar, Delco/Bilstein gas-charged shocks, a 13.0:1 steering gear........
