If it's like my '88, remove the console lid inner cover plate and you'll see where the spring should go.
If it popped out it's likely broken, MAM has replacement springs for $6.99.

spring
if the button popped out, it's probably broken, not the spring.
take the lid off, and turn it upside down on a towel or soft cloth , and remove the screws. nothing will happen except the light bulb over your head will come on.
when I repaired mine, I improvised with a piece of plastic that I filed to the right dimensions.
there is a cavity under the button if the lid is upside down, and in that cavity is where I put the plastic.
If the spring is broken(sounds like it is not) you can replace that.
If the buton is broken and can't be fixed, buy a lid from someone whose lid upholstery is trashed, and use the guts.

Ok, I got a new spring. But how does the spring fit?

Remove the console lid and then its inner liner and you will see where the spring goes.

I see where it goes, just not how it fits in place.
