I have a 95 C4 Auto that when the shift lever is in park the button doesn't alway's pop all the way up which in turn won't let the ignition lock go to lock. Does anyone know what is the easiest way to get to the base of the shifter to clean or replace any worn paets the car only has 37K mi. thank you for any input! RC
Also have a 95 auto (87K miles) with the same problem. It happens only occasionally so I haven't tried fixing yet as I just "wiggle" it free but I too would be interested if someone has figured out a fix. I haven't been able to determine whether the source of the problem is at the base (more likely) or just crud around the shifter button. I was thinking of squirting some Windex in around the button and sucking out any crud with a shop vac the next time I detailed the interior as a start point.
I poped the button off to ck. for crud but it was clean around there it comes off very easly by using a small screw driver prying up on the button itself without doing any damage, I squirted some WD-40 down the shaft hoping to free it up, guess i'll see in a couple of day's thanks for responding-RC
I've found that sometimes the shifter boot will bunch up and not allow the shifter to move all the way forward. It's just a hair off and a push on the shifter will allow it to engage and the button pops up. It's worse in cold weather when the leather is not as pliable. Robert

This maybe so..... I've just had to wiggle the shifter about and the button popped back up. I've been thinking more of a button (mechanism) problem but what you say makes a lot of sense. Will check it out the next time it happens.
If you want to remove the shifter **** you will needa long-nose snap ring tool to remove the snap ring at the inside base of the ****.
Once the **** is off you can slide the shifter console plate up over the shifter lever stalk to access the shift gate.
If the shift positions are off a little there is a nut on the LH side of the A4 that you can loosen so as to adjust the engagement of the shifter mechanism with the A4.
