There is a member here (jonescap is his name I think) with a 96 collectors edition with minimal mods who has gone as fast as 12.19 @ 114 MPH. He's got an electric water pump, 4.09 gears, nitto drag radials, a catback, and a dyno tune. That is crazy fast for the mod level in my opinion.

I would think a stocker would go atleast low 13's, high 12's more likely based on what jonescap has achieved.

A quick Google search turns up:

Oct 96 R&T: First Drive (Grand Sport)
Feb 96 R&T: 0-100-0 comparison (Grand Sport)
Feb 96 R&T: Road test (Grand Sport)
Jan 96 C&D: Road Test (Grand Sport)

Some of the data from the above are here:

Really, really depends a lot upon the driver, the weather and the track. Got lucky and was able to run 12.7's @ 112mph with exhaust mods only. The reason I bought the car is I raced a lt4 In the 1/8th mile and he ran an 8.32 stock which is about a 12.7 to 12.8. Very doable, but most people run in the 13's.

2 years back. i raced one with my basically stock L-98. we ran on 3 times that day. i lost all 3 races, however i did beat him to the 330 foot mark. he ran 13.0-13.2 all 3 times with a trap speed of 107-109mph. track is 600 feet above sea.

All of the original car magazine testing of the LT4 had numbers very close to 13.3 sec @ 107-109mph. Essentially the same whether a Grand Sport, a Collector Edition, or plain jane coupe.......

These were all factory OEM vehicles...

GM rates it at 330hp. They usually put down around 300 to the wheels.

They are quick stock and be made very quick with the right mods. After having an LT4, I would never consider going to a LS1 C5 because it would be too slow

Well, The fastest I've done was 140 and this in 5th and well under 5k rpm's. I let off at this point because I was getting into "felony" speeding territory. Then, the one time I "popped" the clutch, It was third gear when the tires got traction. I just know it's alot of fun to drive!

I've got a MT claiming LT1's have a top speed of 173mph, vs 168 for the GS. Looks like the flares add more drag than I thought.

I guarantee that car had drag radials, at the minimum. Stock LT4's with street rubber have a hard time running under a 9.00. Been there, done that.

C5's with the LS1 are just as quick as a stock LT4. Been there, done that, too. Plus, the LS1 has LOTS more room for improvement....

Yes. The 1996 test by CandD indicated that the LT4 was only slightly, if at all, quicker than the LT1 C4. A little faster, but not significantly quicker.

The LT4 is a very nice engine...possibly the best engine offered in a C4 (even considering the LT5). But it was the last of the old-skool small blocks. The more modern, all-aluminum LS engines that succeeded the LT's are more powerful, and are just now (with the LS7) reaching maturity....10 years after their introduction.

Don't get me wrong; I love the LT4. But it's not the ultimate SBC....and many fans of the LT4 are prone to bestowing capabilities on it that it just does not possess. It's a legend almost, and legends sometimes get credited with achievements they weren't capable of.

I don't disagree that LS1's are great engines and have lots of potential, but for me going to a stock C5 would mean a lot slower car. My mother has a low mileage '99 and it's slow True...LS1's respond well to mods and can make tons of power if you have the $$.

I have a 1996 LT4 with 18,000 miles and a 2001 automatic with 20,000 and the 1996 is quicker . The 2001 may not have the acceleration but it is a better all around car, easier to drive and on a long drive has more comfort. This is only my opinion.

Apples and oranges.
Compare the 2001 M6 to your LT4 and you may be surprised.

You are comparing your mom's stock LS1 to your highly modified LT4?
Of course it would seem slow.........it's probably an auto, too.....
But, is it really slow? Have you raced her car??? SOP can be very misleading.

I don't think "highly modified" is an apt description for his car.

Thank you!
Just beacuse some guy turns out a 12 sec slip in his ride doesnt give bragging rights that yours does in real life. They were all neat cars in their day, but most LT1s, LT4s, and LT5s were 13 second cars which is still respectable today but nothing impressive.
Dont even get me started on the factory freak BS

I ran an 8.45 at 85.5 stock with street tires, and was always well under 9.0, even with tired tires and 2.2 60 fts. I think an 8.32 is doable stock with the right driver, good prep and weather, and good street tires.

Needs heads and cam work to begin to get into that territory.

As much as I like my LT4, it is silly to think it is in any way superior to the LSX motors. They respond to mods much more than ours do.
