Default Zz-x Cam From Tpis

IM LOOKING AT THE T.P.I.S. 2003 catalog and couldnt help but notice that with a ZZ-X cam a 99% bone stock L-98 makes 408.2 HP.. TPIS says.. does anyone have any experience with this cam here? is T.P.I.S. full of B.S. because if not i will learn how to install a cam in record fast time! any help would be appreciated guys! pg 20 2003 catalog

I have no idea what the specs are but Ill call on that. NO CAM by itself will give you 150 hp.

No Way!!! Also, that camshaft is a mismatch for your stock TPI.

You sure thay are not talking about that cam with ported heads, FL headers and a MR...

You can expect from a cam alone around 30chp.

so it is possible to replace just the cam without changing springs / rockers / heads ..... ? 30chp sounds like a decent mod for something thats a few hundred bucks.

Nope.
That cam will likely need 125 pounds on the seat and 320 or so open pressures. Stock won't cut it.

Few hundred bucks price, hundredz on labor and/or alot of time.

But no, you cant even think of using that cam with stock springs.

Not to mention that this cam is a complete waste once you put a TPI intake on it.

TPIS states nothing about using or being a stock L98 (or"99% stock" as you put it) in their dyno tests(page 20, 2003 catalog). What they do state is:

"Would you believe 408hp , 451ft/lb.350 with a factory tuned port a stockTB and only a T.P.I.S. Airfoil- and it pulls to 6300rpm." Further down and to the side of the dyno chart/numbers it states: "Test 2 same L98 with a ported base, stock runners, and 48mm T.B. with a TPIS Airfoil." Included above is this statement:"Test 1 is an L98 350 with mini and a 52mm TB."

The ZZX is a 239/239@50 duration cam with 558 lift, 112 lsa. that is a reasonably big cam that they mnentioned designing for their corvette to run in the Mid-America Corvette Challange Series. As stated above would require heads/ headwork, ehaust etc. etc. If you read the next page it states when using the ZZ9 stock l98 v.springs will need to be changed, and that cam isn't nearly as big as the ZZX.
This is where carefull reading is required, as to not misinterpet the article or their results.

Just take all ad claims with a grain of salt. If it doesn't make sense, it isn't true.

i have desktop dyno open right now...

how much does the STOCK TPI system flow, and what are the full cam specs...i'll give you a good ballpark...this is a hydraulic roller correct?

assuming the TPI flows around the same or better as the stock crossfire setup...with NOTHING DIFFERENT but the addition of the ZZ-X cam Desktop Dyno calls for 300 hp and 350ft/lbs

add long tubes, mini-ram...looking at 400hp and 413ft/lbs

EDIT: these figures drawn at 9.5 to 1 compression - stock 350 - using L98 real head flow numbers and maually inputting the cam specs...

Good luck on making a set of stock 113 or 128 heads flow 400 hp. Lift from the cam means nothing with those heads past .450 so you might as well make whatever cam hold the valve open for 260 degrees at .050.

Seriously, good luck.
