When I'm going along at a slow speed and tap the brakes.. I get a slight clunk coming from the front.. both sides... if I apply steady pressure to the brakes, I don't get the noise. I looked around from the inside of the wheel well and noticed both calipers have a little wiggle in them.. meaning I can grab them from the backside of the wheel and move them around like a 1/8 to 1/4 inch each on there mounts. Is this normal for the brakes on this or should I be puling the wheel off tomorrow to tighten something? Brakes are working great other then the clunk.
Re: Front brakes on a 95.. is this normal? (Springer's 95)
Think I found the answer in searching through the archives... a brake pad without the retaining spring attached will cause the caliper to move slightly.. Does this sound right?
Re: Front brakes on a 95.. is this normal? (Springer's 95)
DEFINATELY, HAVING PARTS MISSING WILL CAUSE IT TO "CLUNK" HOWEVER THE BRAKE CALIPERS ARE DESIGNED TO "FLOAT". THE NOISE YOU ARE DESCRIBING APPEARS TO BE THE BOLTS THAT MOUNT THE CALIPER TO THE BRACKETS ARE LOOSE. YOU MIGHT WANT TO RETORQUE THESE BOLTS.
P.S. YOUR'E NOT VERY FAR AWAY FROM "VETTE BRAKES INC." THE GUYS THERE ARE VERY HELPFUL. I LIVE SOUTH OF YOU AND MADE MY WAY UP THERE EARLIER THIS YEAR AND THEY PROVIDED ME WITH SOME GOOD ADVICE.

Yup :D I hope you haven't tossed your old pads...you can pull off the springs and re-use them. I heard they can wear out and break though.
Re: Front brakes on a 95.. is this normal? (Springer's 95)
well, I took the wheel off and the everything looks in place... I didnt see any bolts that hold the caliper down... it just sort of floats there. How does the caliper come off? The main bracket that cradles the caliper needs to be unbolted from the front spindle? I do see a pin on the bottom of the caliper.. and the pads are brand new... is this rattleing hurting anything?
Re: Front brakes on a 95.. is this normal? (Springer's 95)
The '88+ calipers are not bolted to the bracket...As you said, it basically floats; to remove the caliper, you would remove the C-clip from that lower pin, slide out the pin, then rotate the caliper out of the bracket.
What you are looking for are two curved clips at the bottom of the pads. One clip on each side (inboard and outboard), and they look sort of like wear sensors. I don't know if the rattling hurts anything, but the mounting bracket and pin are not indestructable, so I would try to install the clips. Some have said you can get the clips at Carquest; otherwise you need to get hold of a new set of Raybestos or stock GM pads to get the clips :(

My opinion only. If you have checked and all looks ok, I believe you are ok. I know my brakes on my 95 are good and I get a "little" clunk if you just tap the brakes. Sid.
Re: Front brakes on a 95.. is this normal? (6 speed Sid)
The calipers float freely so they'll wiggle around anyway. But you need the pads with anti-rattle clips on them, which cheap generic pads don't have.
When I got my vette, it had new brakes, but they were from Brake Depot. They rattled like crazy on bumpy pavement, pretty embarrasing. I replaced them with ACDelco pads.. problem solved.
Does anyone have a picture of what this clip looks like? I went looking at pads today and the ones I looked at had clips rivited to the back of the pads.. and little black metal clips that looked like they were wear sensors.. they were mounted on the ends of the pads... the higher dollar pads had them both top and bottom ends
HELP! This clip issue is driving my insane! :smash:
Re: Front brakes on a 95.. is this normal? (Springer's 95)
I've noticed the same thing with my 95's brakes. The clunk only happens after I start backing up and apply the brakes. It never does it going forward though
Re: Front brakes on a 95.. is this normal? (95autoLT1)
the clips are your problem. I've been down this street already. I tossed my springs with the old pads and installed new pads with no spring. I noticed the clunck right away and knew something was wrong. went back to the NAPA store and complained about the pads .... the sales person knew right off the clips were missing and gave me new ones. No more cluncks!!
