What about the lower seal on the timing cover plate. I've read somewhere that it is almost impossible to re-seal it properly without removing the engine. Is it possible to properly seal it from underneath the car while the engine is jacked up a few inches? Can a camshaft change be accomplished in a weekend by jacking up the engine? I have pretty good mechanical skills.

I did my first LT1 Vette cam change last winter, there is some valuable info in the tech section. It was also my first cam change in many many years. You just have to loosen motor mount bolts, don't remove and jack up about an inch to clear cross frame member. You have to drop the pan and replace gasket to get off the timing chain cover. Not that hard of a job but for me time consuming. You will also have to remove intake to get at lifters.
