I left my '96 vette out in the cold last night. 10 farenheit last night with light coating of snow. This morning, I attempted to open the door and the glass was stuck to the weatherstripping (ah hah...source of weather stripping damage!). I finally got the door open and moved the car to the other side of my driveway. I turned the car off, but could not rotate the key backwards far enough to remove it from the ignition lock. I tried in vain for 20 minutes. I jiggled the automatic shifter (normally requires a little jiggle to get the key out). . . to no avail.
I am guessing that the cold somehow is causing the transmission/ignition lock to hang up. My question is, how do I fix this problem? Anyone?
i currently have this prob. im now ordering a new ignition switch, the bad part is i took the steeringwheel apart and dont remember where anything goes!
I had the same prob on my 94. Never got that cold (Louisiana!!) but mine screwed up when it got cold (24F) one night. But, I had to replace the lock cyl. Good luck!!
My 92 ignition key gets sticky in the cold. Never been stuck though. I went out yesterday (minus 32F) and had no problems but did experience a stiffness in the ignition.
'94 ZR1's rec is reasonable then do the graphite thing!
Actually, I put the car in the garage and drove the beater to work. When I came home, the key came right out as though there was no problem. The car is being stripped ...so, I will put the graphite grease on it to avoid this problem next year. Thanks for the tip, that really was a head scratcher...lol

Not graphite grease in the key slot itself. Use liquid graphite.
