Default Quick Clutch Question

I need a new factory replacement clutch for my 96. The clutch is slipping under WOT and for good reason, its never been changed and it has 115K on the ticker. Im selling the car, so I guess I'll take the hit and make sure the clutch is 100%. I know Valeo makes a stock replacment kit with the fixings at about $350. Do I have to replace the flywheel, or can I just replace the clutch. I know you can't resurface the dualmass, but would it be wrong just to slap a new disc on it?

On a side note: I have a close friend who works on high performance GMs at a shop down here in FL, and he told me that he has done a few things to the dual mass flywheels. He has scuffed them and re-used them with a new disc, and he also has machined them. He said if you machine the flywheel very lighted (like .001) it works, but if you dig too deep you spill it's guts, literally. He says they are liquid filled. Any comments?

I don't know if internally there is anything to worry about going out on a dual mass with that many miles, but I have heard from a friend of a friend that you can resurface a dual mass and then add a spacer of equal distance on the other side of the flywheel with no problems. He said there was a shop somewhere here in Texas that has done it quite a few times with success. If you can find someone in Florida that has personally done it and can recommend a shop that has done it, then I would say to go for it. You might want to try one of the local corvette clubs.

Default Just two more cents

I thought that the service life of the D/M was about 100 to 120 K miles? I remember reading that somewhere...just can't remember where. Over at the zr1netforum someone posted up about doing resurfacing & how it's doable.

The only thing I'd be concerned about is the mechanical aspect of the D/M as I think that's the issue when they get upwards of 100K...I think the springs are about used up at that point.

Just a thought! Why not drop an e-mail to zfdoc.com about this??? I know that Bill is always sharing his knowledge on the zf box and it's related parts.

I had my slave dump fluid on my clutch. The local GM dealer replaced the clutch and had my DM flywheel "resurfaced". This was at 48K however. BTW the charge was $40.

Well, I found a flywheel for around $700 brand new from Valeo i believe. It looks to be well manufactured. Have any of you guys tried running the strengthened OEM centerforce clutch with the DM flywheel? Im thinking that may be my best bet. I won't have the noise from a SM flywheel and Ill have some exrtra grabbing power for future mods, if the car doesnt sell. What do you guys think? Or should I spend the money and get the MacDaddy Mcleod?

That's the setup I have right now and it's the best the clutch has ever felt in this car.

What hp/tq numbers are you running. It says it holds more power, but how much can it hold? Im sure it will be fine for LT's, Intake, and exhaust, but will it handle a 100 shot on top of that?
