On the Richmond: I actually did this conversion 2 years ago. Great tranny EXCEPT it is AS NOISY as A DIESEL TRUCKS tranny. This is something nobody ever mentioned. I for one did not want my vette sounding like a diesel truck so I went back to the 4+3...rebuilt OD and trans. I wish the Richmond was as quiet as the 4+3.
Brian does all the mods on every build. The Richmond's biggest complaint was noise, but its basically got the same helical angle as M22 gears, that's why it's noisy. The ZF made strange noises due to harmonics being amped in the gearset. That is why the dual mass flywheel evolved. I suspect it's an engine harmonics issue that is getting amped in the trans as well, similar to the ZF problem.

Remember, look at your beam. Most beams from the factory had a good deal of dampening compound on them. I've seen people scrape off the compound and then have noises and hums.

Be careful. The factory FMX filters come in fiber as well as screen. You need the screen type. The kit from Ecklers is made up by us. It is not a cork gasket, but a composite gasket.

Default Switch Part Numbers and an Ebay Link

What you are paying for is a whole switch assembly. The switch, and a wire harness.

Here are your switch part #'s. This is the same switch used by GM. You can get it from Mouser or I think we still have some kicking around. These are for the switch in the shifter. The late 1985 is different and wired different than the 86-88 with a different connector. Again these are just bare switches.

1986-88 PART# MPA 106F Alco Switch

Look at this Ebay auction....

I scraped the compound off the Cbeam when I did my ZF transplant. Didn't put much back on, but I did use ZFdoc Cbeam plates. Haven't had any issue with strange harmonics. Its very quiet at cruise. At idle I do get a slight "box of rocks" sound when trans gets hot. But then I am using a SM Fidanza AL FW. Once under way, however, no noise.

Paul, On your Website you list

Overdrive soft parts rebuild kit. ( Clutches, gaskets, seals, filter ) - $95.00

Is this what a person will need to do a rebuild....complete after it "Blows up"?

Forgive me, but I know almost nothing about Transmissions, and at the same time I must DIY everything even in the face certain failure.

My motto, why pay $50 and have professional take a day or two to do it for you, when, You could spend $200 and take a week doing it yourself?

That being said, it seems that my '84 has a weakness that I need to tackle, if a person bought that kit from you is there Tech support?

I rebuilt My Mazda Rotary Motor Last year. I had never seen one before but with the help of the forum and a Video tape it was a snap.

I'd like to also interject that this thread has been very good with a lot of good info. One thing I'd like to see is more info concerning the OD unit itself without detouring off in the direction of replacing the entire tranny. A car this old and as you stated....with the prices dropping to what they are now. ($2000-$6000) all that is left is the owner that will do the repairs themselves. A $5k swap to a Nash 6 speed or whatever is never going to happen in a car worth ~$3k

Does 5speed have tech support like that? Could a person make a rebuild video found on Youtube? I'm not asking you to do it. But I like to chronicle anything I do. I would need tech support if I made a video.

and lastly, can one get a date with the redhead on your website?

Less than two quarts when it is completely empty. If you are changing yours, only about a quart will come out. When you putting more in it may not take a quart to fill it.

What the hell is wrong with ebay people? Look at this Q/A

Q: Do you have another shifter button that you could sell at a flat fee? I already have a few spare switches. TIA Artie
A: I suggest you bid on this one. It ends today.

He wants a switch yet fails to bid on the one he is looking at.

Paul, thanks for support, you've been great.

Most OD units have hard parts failures which take out the soft parts. Rarely do they just burn clutches. Hard parts are rare and as I mentioned I sold all the tooling and surplus to SK Speed.

I get asked this alot. Basically when people purchase engine overhaul kits they don't call up and ask the kit manufacturer how to build the engine, do they? Like anything you need to invest in tools, an overhaul manual and time. I have no problem supporting any product I sell, but I just don't have the time to answer questions, such as "how do I get it apart" or "how do I remove this bolt?"
