Unable to install my ALDU1+CABL1 to my laptop. The laptop I used before had a CD drive and I used the CD Craig Moates sent. This laptop does not have a CD drive. I contacted Craig and he told me to download a driver from his website which I did. I have spend about 5 hours looking on this laptop of the last few nights and have come up empty.
I am trying to intall the ALDU1+CABL1 by connecting to the USB port, but when I connect, the install screen does not automatically. But it will when I connect my digital camera or camcorder. Does it sound like the cable is defective?
I have called him and email him already and nothing.
Well, if that means you have a real com port, then you would be a lot better off using that instead of USB.

Normally when a USB device is improperly installed, it will show up in device manager as something else (for instance maybe a camera, or a storage device), or as "unknown device." If it's not showing up as anything at all, then I'd try installing it on another computer to see if the cable itself is bad.
I don't think I have a com port on this laptop. Apparently I did install it wrong, as I can plug it into my desktop computer and it will show up the install screen. So the device is good. I will look again on the laptop to see what I might have installed it under. Is there a way to delete it if so and start over?
As long as it shows up as _something_ in device manager, you just right click on that device and uninstall it. Then unplug it, install the proper drivers, and plug it back in. I'd probably do a reboot after the uninstall just for safety.
If it doesn't show up in device manager at all, then I think the solution will be a windows reinstall.
Oh, and if you don't see another device that might be the USB cable, then try uninstalling that COM1 port.
I looked in the Device Manager again and looks like a fubbed up the install. The cable was installed under something else (unknow device). So I delted it and then tried to plug the cable in the USB and the install window shows up now. So, now maybe I can do something.
This laptop does not have a CD drive and when I purchased the cable from Craig Moates it came with a driver CD. I was able to use the CD with the other laptop I had. So, he told me to look on his website and download a driver. Once I save the file and try and open it, two warning window pops up and says it is missing a link and the other says the device doesn't match.
I am going to try and download the driver file again and see what I can do. I have all the steps I need to follow from his website. I will post back.
A lot of USB devices, if you plug them in before you install the driver, you will FUBAR the install.
Does it show up in the device manager as _anything_ when you plug it in?
Yes, you should remove the driver you just installed, and if you can, use a previous "restore point" in XP (if you are running xp or win 2000)
then insert the USB to serial cable, let the computer ask you for the driver & install it.
I built the winaldl (Jonas) receive only cable and used the Belkin USB-to-RS232 cable, the receive led would flash & the green signal comes on but the Datamaster 32 software did not see the PCM.
The same cable connected to my older laptop with a serial port, and the Datamaster detected the PCM (but there was still problem with my cable).

I'm either going to call Craig this evening or tomorrow evening. From the looks of things, I am unable to open/unzip either driver file from his website on my laptop (these errors show up). I can save either, but when I go to open it on the device install window...neither show up under "browse".

It sounds like you are plugging in the cable and then looking for a driver. You have to install the driver first, before you plug the device in.
I just installed the first driver on the link you gave (http://www.moates.net/zips/CDM_Setup.exe). Installed without a hitch. Don't have a relevant cable, so can't test operation.

I must retract I statement I made earlier, The Belkin device F5U409
instructions state for the XP installation to install the driver and then connect the adapter, the operating system should then identify the device.

I have tried to it both ways and still the same errors show up. I just tried (with USB unplugged) to download the driver and the error shows up. If I try and download the other driver on his website, the small window shows up and starts blinking and I can't do anything with my laptop unless I "End Task".
I can install either driver on my desktop computer without any problems. Thing is I can take it to the car with me.
No damn wonder. The drivers on the website are for Windows XP. My laptop us using Windows 98 SE. I talked to Craig and he is going to try and put a link on his website for the Windows 98.

Maybe I'm getting some where now.
Sounds like it is a step in the right direction!! Let us know how it works out.
I went to Craigs website on my laptop and tried to save and open the windows 98 driver file. When I try and open/unzip the file the download file screen comes up and starts blinking. It blinks for a few minutes until a END TASK screen comes up. I have tried it many times and does the same everytime. WTF
