I have purchased both the targa top liner and adhesive spray for my 84. I am not sure what the best way is to apply the liner. It is bigger then the top so i dunno how i should apply it. Is there any way to remove the cardboard type thing in the hood so i can easily glue to it and if so how easy is it to reattach?
Yes, you can remove the backing board from the Targa, which is the correct way to do it. Be careful because it may be fragile from all the heat it has seen. Once removed, you will need to clean off the old foam backing from the backing board. I basically rubbed it off with a rough towell. Then cut the new material around the perimeter of the backer board , leaving about two inches overlap. You will need to notch the corners and also in the curves ocasionally . Apply the spray upholstry adhesive liberally to the backer board and the stick place the new foam backed fabric on the board. I found it easier to lay the fabric face down on a table and place the board on it (also face down). Once you have the fabrc smoothely applied to the backer board, you can flip it over and glue down the over hanging fabric on the back side of the board.
I found the easiest way to replace the assembled headliner in the frame was to insert the front curves side into the frame and then work the sides and back into the frame ,using a putty knife.
my blackboard seems to be glued to my top... im not sure if i should just rip it off and try to salvage it as best i can or what...
Yes, I should be glued to the top, but if you are careful you should be able to pry it up using a large putty knife , once you get an edge up. If you try to install the material without taking it up , Idon't think you can get the new material on smoothly with the edges tucked in properly.
I had mine redone as the glues kept failing in very hot weather. So, I had mine done by an upholstery shop with leather. Been on in Hawaii for 6 years since done here, and hasnt failed and looks great. But 3M makes a great spray glue you can get at any good craft store.
I got my new liner up and it looks great!!! I ended up using 5 big velcro strips to hold the blackboard back onto the top and it is working awsome. Thanks for all the help!!!
