Re: Hurst Shifter Install without removing the exhaust? (89vette)
While "technically" it is possible, Chris will tell you that you'll save yourself at least an hour in installation time by dropping the exhaust out of the way. Since the exhaust only takes about 10 minutes to get off, I'd say you'll be way ahead.
Re: Hurst Shifter Install without removing the exhaust? (89vette)
So long as you have sufficient room to access the lower boot and drive out/in the pin you should be okay. Then you'll also need room to get the zip tie's back on. If you feel you've got the room to do all that, good for you, otherwise drop the exhaust.
Re: Hurst Shifter Install without removing the exhaust? (89vette)
I would not recommend it unless you are a professional mechanic (or so skilled) and/or you have done one of these shifters before. Its maddeningly tight quarters up in there (dirty and blind too). You not only have to deal with the pin (which can be stubborn), you have to deal with the clip too that holds it in place. Having done it before (with the Ripper) I still can't imagine doing it with the exhaust on. Here's my torture story. Perhaps it will help you avoid some pitfalls: http://www.snowdirt.com/corvetteshifter.html
(the pinning/unpinning should be the same as the ripper)

Thanks guys. Revoving the new exhaust looks as though it will be quite challenging. The cats are slipped on but the pipe coming out of the cat is welded then clamped to the resonator. I'll have to remove it from the rear forward. I guess its worth a try to remove it if it makes it that much easier. I think though that R and R of the exhaust will take more than an hour.

I've taken my exhaust off as a single piece 3 times now. All you need to do is drop the 4 bolts from the center hangers, loosen the cat clamps then drop the rear brackets and wiggle the system out.
I would suggest that you use your second lifeline and "call a friend" to assist you in the operation.
Took me a total of about 10-15 minutes each time to remove the system. If you pull it complete, it also lines right back up without any work.
