I had mine done at IDA Automotive in Morganville, NJ. THe charge for dyno time was $150 for the first hour and then $100/ hour after that. The tuner charge me about $250. I spent a little over $1000 total.
If your a/f ratio, etc. is way off then you'll notice a big diff. I have to ask-you weren't thinking of going to perf. assoc. in San Dimas I hope????
Cause he don't know his a** from a hole in the ground; and he says he'll dyno tune it!! :bs He's a big reason why I burn my own now!!! If you don't want to diy, in our area for dyno tuning (but he only does late model now) is Z-industies. Hope this helps and maybe saves you a lot of grief!!!!
I didn't have a choice. The motor idled poorly and it ran way too rich with the bigger injectors. I tried an Ed Wright chip but it was a piece of junk. In fact, it's sitting collecting dust on the shelf.
Holy Crap! I could be making a killing. But, the guys on diy-efi said I shouldn't make money off their work, and I agree. Anyway, a custom tune should help your car, but I wouldn't spring for a dyno tune or a dial-a-chip. You can burn your own chips for a lot less than that.
Aaron- I know that Grumpy et al at third gen are strongly against making $$$ off chip burnin' but I don't see any reason why we can't horse trade for parts etc. and I sure don't turn down free beer!!!!!
I don't mind doing favors, and if someone wants to help me in return, that's great. But, asking for any compensation is going too far I think. The guys on thirdgen and diy-efi graciously taught me what I needed and how to do it. I didn't pay for someone to teach me or figure it all out by myself. Therefore, if I charge for burning, I'm benefitting from their hard work with none of the compensation going to them. With the knowledge I gained from them, I could make hundreds of $ per chip just programming for locals who don't know any better or are too lazy or apathetic to learn. But, in my mind, it's not right.
i guess, i'll go get the car dynoed and see how much the new motor
is puting out. runs really good right now, but i've heard that since mine is a 92 speed density (calibrated for 350), that i'll need it to be recalibrated for 383.
Sorry to keep getting off topic. BlackRocket - here's a hypothetical, say you took all of your years of electrical engineering knowledge and spent A LOT of time hacking through GMs code figuring out what means what and how do you change it. After you figure it out, you tell others how they too can do it. This is for others' benefit so they don't have to go out and buy overpriced ECM replacement stuff like DFI. You're willing to give away your hard work, but you ask that people use the info for their projects, not as a money-maker. Then, lots of people catch on and start learning about what you figured out. Some say, "Hey, this would be a great business, no one in my town burns chips yet so I'll do it and charge less than XYZ mail order chip." Now, people are making money off of your work and not giving you anything in return. They're making all the returns off of little investment. Wouldn't that **** you off? It pisses me off and I didn't even figure the code out. That's why i limit my role to helping the people I can who want to learn. I don't charge for my service, because the guys that helped me didn't charge me for theirs.
Sorry for the rant. Just trying to ensure that the guys who are leading the diy efi 'movement' don't get pissed off and stop helping.
