Nope not hard:

Have to remove the button on top (has shift pattern on it).
Remove the OD switch rod by tuning it (count how many turns to aid installation).
Remove the metal wedge, might have to use pliers.
Unscrew ****.
Remove trim bezel, screws for the boot are underneath it.

This was on my 86 can't remember what year GM started putting the OD switch on the shifter.

EDIT: Reverse **** just slides up after **** is removed.

If this is for the 85 listed in your profile then it is fairly straightforward since the OD switch is on the console.
To remove the shifter boot you need to remove console top plate and to remove that you need to remove the bezel around the radio.
Shifter **** is just threaded onto the shifter.
The shifter boot is attached to the shifter by a circlip.

I went to check it out and it seems harder than said.

As you can tell my old crusty boot needs to be replaced, Then my int will be back to mint *

To get the shifter *** off i just Turn it off ?> It doesnt want to turn, am i going to have to put a rag and then a wrench around it ?

And then what about the reverse lever ? Whats up with that ? I assume i have to get all that off to pull it up ?

Thanks again

Dan

Is the wedge removed? If so, then yes, you may need to get a "strap wrench" to break loose the **** itself.

Default Removal Process

1. Disconnect negative battery cable.

2. Remove the screws retaining the trim plate for the instrument cluster. Remove the **** for the headlight switch; next remove the lever for tilt steering column and then the trim plate.

3. Remove the screws retaining the instrument panel accessory trim plate and then remove the trim plate.

4. Remove the screws retaining the console trim plate. Pull trim plate back and disconnect the electrical lead to cigarette lighter. Remove the screws retaining shift boot to trim plate, next remove trim plate.

5. Remove the overdrive switch button from the shifter ****. Use care when prying the button from the shifter. Count the number of turns required to remove the rod.

6. Remove the rod for the overdrive switch from the shifter. Count the number of turns required to remove the rod.

7. Loosen the nut retaining the switch to the shifter and remove the switch and actuator block from the shifter. Care must be taken not to lose the spring located in the actuator block.

8. Disconnect the electrical lead for the switch.

9. Remove the pin retaining the switch to the actuator block.

There is no over drive button, its on the console 85.

I gues my main question is the reverse mechanism

Is the process pretty much the same for removing the shift boot from an automatic? I am getting ready to attempt making my own shift boot from high quality vinyl to replace the original 20 yo leather one.
