Default Question about OEM LT1 pistons

I was tearing down a LT1 that I have for project and I decided to pull the timing cover and then the oil pan. After I dropped the pan I used a bright light to inspect the bottom end. The guy I bought this motor from said it was supposed to be stock. After looking closely at the pistons I noticed a couple of them had Mahle stamped in them.

So, my question is, did Mahle supply the factory pistons, or has someone replaced the pistons in this motor? It would appear to me that they are factory but I would like to confirm this.

They've been replaced.

How certain are you of this? I thought I remembered reading somewhere that Mahle supplied the pistons for LT1's, LT4's, and LT5's.

I have also read many places that the stock LT1 pistons are Mahle.

I've never heard that. And I've disassembled several LT1s including my own when it was original and never saw that name on them. But who knows, maybe they were. How many valve reliefs are in each piston?

I race an L98 and have taken many later cores apart. I just went out and looked at a piston that I had in the cabinet that I had saved. It is a Mahle. The piston has ind.brasil cast in it as well as some other #s.

I will have to go back out to the shop to double check, but I think there were two reliefs in each piston.

The factory LT1 pistons I've seen all have four. I guess this is so Mr. Goodwrench wouldn't have to tax his brain figuring out which way they go on the rods!

A member here just PMed me re/ a stock set of LT1 pistons I'd sent him a while back. I know that these were indeed factory pistons and he informed me that they do indeed say Mahle inside of them. So there you go! The learning never stops here.

Wow, I would like to know the story about that motor. Did detonation do all of that? It looks like a Rottweiler chewed it up.
