The red wire from the relay connector to the fusable link is good. From the link to the terminal block is bad. I assume the link opened. Does anyone know where I can get a new link in a manner that I can splice it into the existing harness?

Any auto parts store should have fuseable links. But do you know why it is blown?

Do I remember that the fan blew some other fuse when you were testing it?

Anyway, might want to get a couple of those fusable links, in case it blows the new one. That fan should take around 12A or so (guess). You could try measuring current to the fan with it hooked up (through a 20A fuse) to the battery; and see if it has an internal short of some sort.

I also suppost that it is remotely possible for the relay to have a short, but seems less likely than the motor.

It blew the 10A ECM fuse on one attempt at isolating. Have not blown another one. I'll pick up some new links Monday and see what happens. I suspect a fan motor the more I look at things.

On my 86 the wire broke off right where it emerges from the fusable link.

There was no way to repair it . (the link was not blown) I've been to several parts houses and can't find a fusable link like the one on my vette. I installed a heavy duty ATC fuse holder. The old fusable link had a 20 stamped on the side of it so I put a 20 amp fuse in the holder and it blew right away. Then I put a 25 in and it blew after a days use. I think fusable links are slow blow. They can handle the initial jolt that an electric motor delivers without blowing, unlike regular fuses. I'm going to try a chevy dealer tomorrow for the original style fusable link. Let me know if you find out where I can get one. Thanks.

I'm going to my local Chevy dealer tomorrow, I'll let you know what I find. Also, found the fan motor to be binding after I took it apart from the fan. I'm going to replace it as well.

Glad you found it. It's 14 gauge fusible link to a 12 gauge wire. Maximum amperage for this setup is suppose to be 20 amps.

I kept blowing fuses, it turned out the fan was on the way out.

It would run for a while, then kill the fuse.

I took it out and hook it up directly to the battery, it ran but sounded like a tug boat!

Fusible links are rated by gauge not amps.

You will find that the new replacement fan motors do not have the holes in the front like the old ones. I beleive the motors are sealed better to avoid water entering the motor. Just an observation. :chevy

Cruz 86 - Chevy dealer did not have fusable links. Went to CarQuest they had them. That and a new fan motor fixed problem. :chevy

Yes, fusible links are rated by gauge - but put a 30 amp load on unprotected 12 gauge and watch your car burn to the ground. The ampacity of 12 gauge is 20 amps. That's why you use the fusible link - when the draw exceeds the rating of the circuit, the heat melts it internally, a little smoke maybe, but no sparks and therefore, no flames.
