88 Brake Question
On my 88 the brakes are strange. When I first start the car and back out of the garage with my foot on the brake I hear a vacuum sound and the pedal gets kind of hard. After I go to drive the brake pedal seems fine. Some stops the pedal travel seems to be a bit too much. Other times it is fine. I have check for leaks on the calipers and have found nothing. Could there be air in the line causing this? Thanks for any suggestions anyone has.

I get a moanin noise when I back up, I think its the abs workin, anywho my brakes just went out on me had to emergency brake it home (see wooh no brakes post)just replaced master cyl. 1-hr. ago easy job , brakes are much better, maybe your cyl. might be goin also. :eek: :cheers:

Each time you start the car the ABS does a self diagnostic when you reach 4 mph. The ABS motor runs for about 1 sec, making that "grrrr" sound, and you can feel the vibration in the pedal if your foot is on the brake at the time. I was never satisfied with the stock brake pedal firmness. Changing to braided stainless steel lines helped.
If you have any suspicions about air in your lines, bleed your system. It is cheap and easy insurance.
Do not use silicone brake fluid - it is makes for a very spongy pedal.

I think your master cylinder is starting to fail. My symptoms included the pedal going way down at random times then immediately going back to normal. The problem got worse from there. Pulled the master cylinder and found a gray like paste in the seals. Got a replacement master cylinder from NAPA and problem was cleared.
